Australian ISP to speed up BitTorrent downloads?

Mulls introducing a P2P caching solution that will deliver P2P data that has previously been retrieved by another customer directly from an Exetel “mirror” and only using external sources for data that isn’t available from the local disks.

Exetel, the popular Australian ISP, has just completed a 6 month trial of of P2P traffic “management,” and has proclaimed that the test “…has worked very well” with “Basically the net effect on the total downloads per customer has been the predicted zero and speeds for over 18 hours a day have been largely or completely unaffected for the vast majority of P2P users.”

With these results being beneficial to both Exetel’s network and its customers, both P2P and non-P2P users alike, it has decided to move to something “…as effective from Exetel’s viewpoint but that provides an even less ‘intrusive’ effect on any individual customer’s P2P performance.”

“Some time between early August and late October we will gradually phase out the NE 2540 and replace it with a P2P caching solution that will work in the way of most caching solutions of delivering P2P data that has previously been retrieved by another customer directly from an Exetel “mirror” and only using external sources for data that isn’t available from the local disks,” reads a new press release.

It furthers, “This solution has been developed specifically for P2P ‘torrent’ programs and from the users in the USA it seems to be a superior solution to the NE2540 and other hardware that does P2P bandwidth allocation in that it actually speeds rather than slows P2P downloads.”

This could mean quicker data retrieval times for users and thereby speed up overall P2P download speeds but, it could also cause it to run afoul of copyright protection laws if the data in question, like BitTorrent trackers for instance, is deemed to be infringing.

This solution to decrease the traffic load on Exetel’s network “…has been developed specifically for P2P ‘torrent’ programs and from the users in the USA it seems to be a superior solution to the NE2540 and other hardware that does P2P bandwidth allocation in that it actually speeds rather than slows P2P downloads,” meaning it’s good news for P2P and non-P2P users alike.

This could be an interesting development for customers of Exetel for it may mean that it could better insulate P2P users from complaints over bandwidth usage since steps have been taken to decrease their burden without any apparent effect on their download speeds. Rather than trying to eliminate the very customers that require improved infrastructure and bandwidth capacity, and thereby make the ISP’s otherwise unneeded expansion necessary, it has decided to improve the system so that it makes everyone happy.
