New study says that 51% of illegal file-sharers in Italy use eMule compared to about 3% who use BitTorrent.
Italy’s Luigi Einaudi Foundation has published some new research about illegal file-sharing in Italy that offers up some interesting tidbits about their habits and preferences, the most interesting being that an amazing 3/4 of those surveyed have used an illegal P2P or file-sharing program.
Somewhat bolstering the RIAA’s arguments about how illegal file-sharing is to blame for decreasing CD sales, the study shows that 30% of illegal file-sharers have cut back on the amount of physical media such as CDs and DVDs, that they purchase, with only about 6% saying that it actually increases their likelihood to buy such products.
Of those that have downloaded digital music online, an astounding 77% said they have used illegal P2P and file-sharing programs, with 51% using eMule, 25% using WinMX, 13% using KaZaA, and only 2.7% using BitTorrent.
Now why eMule is so attractive to users in Italy isn’t clear in the report but, considering that 68% of those questioned said they had only a basic knowledge of the “technology world” it makes sense that they would choose a file-sharing program that doesn’t require “port forwarding” or newsgroup navigation.

Not to mention that over here in Italy one of the most fast and popular DSL provider (fastweb) uses a NAT network were all the people shares the same IP towards the internet. This means that they are quite stuck with torrents since they are not directly reachable BUT there is this really famous eMule mod called adunanza wich connects all fastweb clients using the kademilia protocol. This gives these users only eMule to share but with really fast downloads.
interesting.
Pardon?Telecom Italia is making this?
Nope not telecom Italia. Fastweb. They were the first to offer a DSL without any phone monthly fee to pay. With telecom if you want the DSL you have to take the phone contract too.
Thing is that the phone line that connects all Italians was made by the goverment (which use to own telecom Italia) for most companies to build a parallel cable line was too expencive. Fastweb did it and in some big cities with fiber cables.
Anyways people with fastweb uses emule adunanza mod. Everybody else are too layzy to learn to use torrents/usenet or whatever else is out there. Not to mention that the common knowledge of the internet is not as high as in most civilized coutry and last but not the least not many Italians speak English. English language torrents are quite useless over here (not for me I do speak the lingo).
we have millions of german torrents here…most people download over here german torrents also if they are fluid in english!
