Those players are ok but playing mkv files with subtitles will make the video and subs go out of sync. And unless you convert 720p to mp4 format, dont expect to be watching hd movies either. And plz do the world a favor jail break it…its idiotic not to. Unless you like having a 975$ paper weight.

Use video players like Oplayer HD, yxplayer, BUZZ Player if you want to watch .avi, .mkv, .rmvb, etc. Some are for free on iTunes but some take small charges else jailbreak and download it for free.

Apple tech specs are always conservative.

Now that’s it out we see it plays AAC up to 256 Kbps and also handle h.264 Level 4.1 at high profile.

I agree. I would’ve bought an Apple TV but it didn’t support common formats so I bought the WD HDTV box that does. I would’ve bought an iPod but again, same problem, so I bought a Creative Zen Vision M. I love Apple products, they are great, ironically Apple is more grass roots with the “develop your own app” for the iPhone and now iPad, but come on! This really does suck. Apple is too pie in the sky sometimes, good or bad, they need to let people do what they want with their stuff, not force people.

that small screen works for hd.

1. the professional hd dv cameras used for tv production has a very small screen.

2. there is a benefit to putting hd on that size screen is that you will not see pixelation when using the zoom feature of the video player.

I will be interested to see when it get jailbroken if we see a VLC app for the pad, and, if so, what the currnt hardware capabilities are with regards to video.

In the more active vide front, I’m shocked there is no camera.. even the nano has a camera.

I think the ipad can fit in as a handheld portal to the inernet… a bit more interactive than a straight up media consumption device. At least that is giving them the benefit of the doubt, because I think you hit it on the head with video and I think (except for comic books) i has a ways to go on purely static content. They NEED creators to make different content, because they aren’t fully serving the existing needs of consumers with regards to legacy content.
