The Pirate Bay to launch YouTube-style video streaming site

posted by soulxtc in bittorrent // 467 days 19 hours 42 minutes ago

Ends all the speculation and formally announces the "latest and greatest" project from the world's most famous BitTorrent tracker site.

Previously I speculated that the "it's coming" project was the Playble music subscription site that would offer users the option of paying whatever monthly subscription fee that they could afford with fees going directly yo the artists themselves.

Well, Brokep ends all the speculation this morning and announces that they're going to create a new "video streaming site." much like YouTube but without the censorship.

He writes:

Oh, and the surprise that's coming... it's still not what people think it is... it's been speculations on it being Playble.com or the video somewhat secret video site.

But, as a treat I can tell you - YES - we're going to do a video streaming site. It's true. It's in the works being done right now and as usual we put a bit of Pirate Bay mentality behind every project we do.

In a chat I had with Brokep this morning on good ol' fashioned iRC, he was kind enough to answer a few questions about the site and what it will all be about.

He confirmed where the site will be -- http://thevideobay.org/, and furthered that they had performed a test stream on Eurovision a while back, and that it held up with "no problem whatsoever."

The site will be modeled after YouTube in that content will be user generated. What will set it apart however, is that there will be "no censorship," that The Pirate Bay "will not be the moral police" and determine what content stays or goes as is oftentimes the case with YouTube. He then hinted that that the community will instead be the censors, that "the community will have to do that."

He then noted that it will be a "different game than torrents since we will host the content," meaning that they will have to deal with copyright issues. But, as is usually the case with The Pirate Bay they "have some aces up (their) sleeves on how to solve it."

"We're going for a free system, with a solution to not care so much about copyright but still not breaking laws," he said. "We're not revolutionizing the world, we're taking it just a small step further."

This could really be an interesting development in the world of user generated content sites, because as we all know the content may be generated by the user but it's the site that determines what content stays or goes. The site plays content police, and with this new project from The Pirate Bay, users will now take up that role and make for some much needed freedom, especially in light of YouTube kowtowing to countries like Thailand who objected to videos mocking their King which were subsequently removed.

Stay tuned. (Thanks again Brokep)

  • #2    Its nothing like ES5, the reason for that is that the pirate bay often follows through with their initiatives (except the country buying one) and do so without damaging your computer.

  • #3    ES5?? That is a bit of a stretch don't you think Christoph?

TPB may not be perfect, but they are FAR from being the scam artists that the crew of ES5 turned out to be!

I think you are dead wrong on that one.

Yeah? Well making announcements over things you would like to change on a website is a FAR cry from the promises that the people at ES5 made and never followed through!

So I still think you are dead wrong.

  • #7    about that "pacific island" . they did exactly what they said , namely that they would try to bid on Sealand .

The problem is , however , that the owners of sealand don't want TPB to buy it from them .

So they are looking for an other place , but it's not like it's easy . And at this point they are still safe in Sweden .

From my experience , they usually do what they promise , but it never goes as smooth as they thought it would be :-)

  • #8    Its strange that they are save in sweden.Copyrights are the same like in all western countrys.More problematic is that they don't have even enough money to move to sealand.

  • #9    I'm really worried about this. I think they should let someone else do this because if someone goes after them for the video sharing site, then the torrent tracking part may suffer as well.
