Voddler Offers Movies On-Demand

Users can watch over 800 movies for free or at little cost.

Content innovation apparently continues to elude the US with news that a new Sweden-based movies on-demand service called Voddler launched a few weeks ago.

Though comparable to Hulu, users of the services’s free movie section are only forced to watch a single advertisement that appears before the movie begins, much like the experience at a movie theater. They’re also able to stream TV programs and music.

Users of the premium content section will be asked to pay a fee, and monthly subscriptions will be offered early next year.

Voddler executive vice president Zoran Slavic hopes the service will offer people a safe alternative to illegal downloading.

“Our customers can be sure that Voddler is totally legal, secure, and that there are no risks of computer viruses infecting their machines from downloaded files,” he told The Local.

Slavic says that P2P has changed consumer expectations, that many now feel that they should be able to watch movies online for free, and thus online movies are “the way of the future.”

I agree. Movie fans no longer feel constrained by time or location and want to be able to watch movies when and where they choose. Movie studios ignore consumers at their own peril, and should remind themselves of the music industry experience with doing so.

Movies on-demand truly is the future.

Unfortunately for most, Voddler is available only in Sweden with plans to expand to Norway, Denmark, and Finland in 2010. Slavic says he’s looking to markets in Europe and North America, but I think we all know the movie industry won’t allow anything that could siphon ticket or the all important DVD sales – it’s real bread and butter.

Stay tuned.
