Make your own ringtones
This is my preferred method of creating ringtones, I have access to all my music and can control the sampling for the ringtone. Currently I use http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/ which is an easy to use editor my music files. There are plenty of audio editing tools that allow you to sample mp3 files, just look on Google: http://www.google.com/search?q=mp3+editor.
All you have to do is select the part of the song you want to use as your ringtone and save it to your computer. Not all phones let you upload custom ringtones to your phone, so check your phone for upload capacity and also check out which type of format your phone supports as not all phones support mp3 ringtones.
I own a Treo 700w and I can easily put ringtones on my phone, I will never buy another phone that doesn’t allow this as this is the best feature on my phone to date.

Why purchasing ringtones is not always the best choice
Last year I bought over 15 ringtones from Verizon’s ringtone store, when I went to upgrade my phone I was notified that I could not transfer my purchased songs to my new phone. This really got me upset, I was upset at the fact that even though I had legally purchased the ringtones, I could not transfer them to another device or even get credit for the ringtones I purchased. I almost left Verizon because of this. I feel that if you purchase CD’s or even purchase ringtones you should be able to transfer the files to other phones if they support them. I support artists all the way, I just to be able take advantage of my purchasing power and harness the music like I should be able to.

Why not hack your phone? I have an LG phone from Verizon with a 512MB flash card and clean mp3 ringtones(no DRM) from my personal collection for all my friends. It’s not that hard to hack a phone. If in doubt ask Google. 512megs that’s like 60 to 100 people. Anyways I certainly don’t have 60 to 100 friends and I’ve given my mother the same ringtone as restricted or unlisted numbers to avoid any confusion.
In conclusion you have a good post but is quickly becoming extinct as the Ultimate geeks find a better way.
cool thx been looking for this thank you very much!
There are plenty of places with free ringtones but usually you pay twice there…
First time you pay by your personal info because those “free” sites almost always require to register.
Second time you pay for using the phone’s network to send ringtones through expensive pic messages.
The FREE way is to trim any mp3 song in Audacity or at http://makeownringtone.com and transfer the ringtone to the card in a SD card reader.
It’s very surprising to see the number of people that pay for ringtones. But the numbers show that the mobile / ringtone industry is two times bigger than it was just 1 year and a half ago. Personally I have never paid for a ringtone. I keep it simple and use the default ringtone selection that my Nokia provides.
Every now and then I’ll have the urge to put a special ringtone for when my wife calls. For that Ventones
http://www.ventones.com
is the site I’ve been registered with for about two years now. Its completely free and they do not charge any monthly or one time fees.
I use their free Uploader to send the ringtones to my phone.
They also have a free online ringtone maker. Its simple I grab any audio file from my pc upload it to their site select the ringtone portion of the song and they send it to my phone.
On special occasions I have even made animated images and slideshows for my wife’s Birthday or Valentine’s Day.
I think there should be a way 2 get free ringers
