I understand. Thanks for the reply.

I'm guessing the situation with the CMPDA and the MPAA is similar?

And I'm also guessing that the CMCC is also opposed to those big scary copyright laws.

I can only hope that the policy-makers of Canada aren't so easily swayed by the record label dinosaurs. I say let the fossils fall where they may. I also say that artists need to be paid for what they create.

This is so stupid. All it's really going to do is jail some 17 year old kids for downloading the entire Beatles collection or a beta copy of Diablo 3.

If the Canadian government isn't willing to follow through with taking down one of the biggest torrent sites out there, this law definitely isn't going to fly- and, even if it is, it won't be enforced.

"the CRIA and RIAA are completely unrelated in terms of “branching” except for the fact that they’re both RIA’s"

They have the exact same members (big four). They lost a huge swath of Canadian labels when they lobbied for Bill C-60 while the Liberals were in power. Those labels went on to create the Canadian Music Creators Coalition. In terms of membership, ever since then, they've been little more than the Big Four reps in Canada (Sony Music Canada, etc). So yes, CRIA is merely the Canadian "branch" of the RIAA. They have Canadian labels, but those few labels are small and are basically on their "C" list at best.

First of all, the CRIA and RIAA are completely unrelated in terms of "branching" except for the fact that they're both RIA's. You know, even the CRIA somewhat opposed bill C-61, on the grounds that "it did too much", and they'd rather have a bill that focussed more on "commercial piracy". (But don't trust me. I got this from WIkipedia.)

Second of all, I'm completely opposed to this law. What's the point in three strikes? Why not just deal with it the first time and get it over with? That being said, I'm not supportive of one strike either, but I'm saying that that kind of law would be more efficient, and fairer. Of course the best option would be "no draconian law at all", but we all know the industry won't let that happen.
