"On the movie side of things, many have complained about the decline of the quality of movies. "
One word : remake.
Remake or spin-off, sequel it's all the same for me. The producer don't want to take any risk. If a formula works, they use it again and again and again ad nauseam.
When they don't produce remakes of books, comics-books, foreign movies or very old movies; they produce remakes of recent films. Coming soon, a remake of Robocop, great.
And you know what ? It does work. I don't watch all theses remakes because I prefer the original. But all my friends are watching Terminator 22 or the sequel of the adventures of Sarah Connor on tv. So, why would the producers take some risk since the consumers are nothing but... Consumers.

The person who wrote this article is an idiot. Or, more generously, a person prone to speculation without a grasp of the obvious:

Files are FREE! FREE, bitches. Why would anybody pay for something that they could have FREE? Even if movies/music/software cost 1 cent to download, people would still download it for FREE because it saves them money.

At the same time as P2P sharing makes information accessible to everyone at zero cost, our (definitely American and, to a lesser extent, Western) economy is gravitating towards "third-tier" status: information services (as opposed to first-tier, which is agricultural, and second-tier, which is industrial -- those jobs now represent less than 1/3rd of our total jobs).

So, our economy is going to be information-based... and information is now FREE.

This is a problem which pontificating will not solve. Standards and procedures need to be implemented at the logical levels - namely, ISP's need to begin monitoring and regulating what comes and goes through their networks. And pirates need to get the book thrown at them, hard. Not just isolated soccer moms and college kids - and not in amounts wildly disproportionate to their crimes, either.

The main argument against regulating at the ISP level is one of privacy - if they monitor what's coming and going, they have an awful lot of power over us. And I sympathize with that. But what else can we do?

By the way, notice that the makers of HARDWARE (ipods especially) are making off like bandits. And the ISP's are doing GREAT business.

So, you tell me: what are we gonna do?

The industry really needs to look at whats going on , I was recently in chicago and most cd stores are gone and hard to find the nobles etc. carry less so when looking for titles of catalog items they are not available , when looking for a movie on dvd such as( the mexican) everybody was out of stock , and sales people just look at the computer and say no try( best buy) so a trip to best buy again clueless sales staff and not in stock but when you look to p2p sites the movie is up for download so i ask myself what are the exec. thinking and what do they expect and what happened to knowledge of supply and demand and a staff that can assist when someone does not know a title of song etc.

As someone in the industry it is really frustrating that instead of looking at the problem and eduacating the consumer they are to busy fighting them and us as artist end up getting screw as far as royalties but if i as an artist have to hunt down more than 3 stores to find something that should be easy to find well i have questions of the industry.

to My Name: dont be a douche, stick to the topic.

as far as the topic, i pretty much stopped using limewire and kazaa due to the amount of fake files, especially within the less mainstream music. Another reason is the fact that a lot of people dont label the files correctly and i end up downloading the wrong thing over and over which just kills the point of it.

"or just dumping todays music altogether"

Adding an "s" to the end of a word doesn't make it possessive. You're thinking of an apostrophe and an "s" in most cases.

It certainly is in decline - entertainment industry surveys show this - but the losses for industry are rising, of course, as the legitimate digital offer becomes a proportionately larger part of overall revenues. You forgot to mention successful litigation against file-sharing sites, action by ISPs and extensive public education.
