FL Studio actually has a built in plug-in called "Beep Map" which reads different colours as different kinds of "instruments". I think the different colours represented tonal differences wheras the vertical placement on the picture represented pitch while, of course, horizontal placement represented the timeline. A similar concept I'm pretty sure and it's one of those built-in plug-ins that is on my "to-learn" list. That thing seems spectacular for making pads, though I already have a number of plug-ins that makes pads through different processes.

I've pondered the use of more intuitive interfaces for sampling. One idea I came up with was for the use of gestures drawn on a sheet music timescale. Different colors could be different instruments. You could layer them so you would only see the instruments you want, and basically draw your music rather than put down set notes. From my perspective this should allow for a more natural writing system than the current one in place.
