With news of Sony’s decision to discontinue the 20GB PS3 and a lively debate about the pricing of the console on this week’s Showdown, many people seem to think that the system is just too expensive for the mass market. If you live in the UK you can find systems on sale with some nice bundles, but in the US we have no such luck. The introductory price of the system is now $600 since there is no lower priced model that’s shipping to retailers, and Sony is apparently thinking about adding more hard drive space to the system. It’s still unknown what that will do to the price of the system.
While pictures of stacked, unopened systems and doomsday articles are becoming popular Internet fodder, the price of Sony stock is doing well, according to the Bloomberg article. The PlayStation 2 is still selling incredibly well and God of War 2 has proven that the system still has legs to it, and even though the sales numbers of the DS are spectacular, it’s not like the PSP is losing money for Sony, either. Channeling that momentum into higher adoption rates for the PlayStation 3 hasn’t been the easiest job for Sony so far, though.
