FileTwt – “File-sharing On Twitter”

Use Twitter as a P2P service to share up to 20MB with family or friends.

FileTwt is handy new file-sharing service that lets you share files with family or friends using the popular Twitter social networking and micro-blogging service.

It offers two types of FileTwts, public and private, the latter requiring registration. Registered users also get a handy dropdown list of Twitter friends to better facilitate private sharing.

Registration and use is free and it has a 20MB max file size cap. The data cap isn’t too bad if you consider it’s an easy way to share files quickly using Twitter.

The only real downside is that it shares files using Rapidshare, meaning that free users have to suffer the usual 30sec or more wait time to get a file that could just as easily be shared using Drop.io or any of the other multitude of file-hosting sites.

Here’s what it looks like on the downloader side of things:

FileTwt’s main plus is really just the simplicity and ease of use, uploading a file for you and spitting out a nice prepackaged tweet on Twitter.

STORY UPDATE (5/26/09):

FileTwt says it will be removing the pesky Rapidshare middle-man fuss and host the files on their own servers in a “few days.”

From FileTwt’s blog:

We’ll start hosting the uploaded files ourselves in a few days! So no waiting from then on, all direct downloads from FileTwt’s servers!

We’ll be hosting the files for 15days, which should be ample time to tweet about a file and get in downloads.

Isnt is easier to use binfer.com? What can be easier than drag and drop and the file goes straight to the contacts computer, bypassing the entire upload/download process. Now it would be interesting if they sent notifications via twitter…

Great post. I agree this service will be excellent when they have their own host. Thats normal procedure for a new startup , improvement takes place gradually . The 20 Mb is free . who knows, they might add file size plus a $$

so, http://drop.io has had this functionality forever…. and from what i can tell the way drop.io has it set up allows much bigger files, with more options and other features like phone.

this looks like a cool interface, but nothing new

    @Drew
there is a certain expressed connotation relating to large file hosting sites that twitter may not want to inexplicably associate itself with. I am guessing it has to do with implied liabilities and any further legal wrangle.

The 20Mb Cap will be removed soon , and we will justify the use of filetwt instead of regular uploading services..

    Cheers.

I don’t understand the 20 meg cap. Wouldn’t it be just as easy to upload it onto MegaUpload and post that link on Twitter?

Yah, but can do a quick post/UL combo….instead of having to go to two different places and grab 2 links.
