Artists need to find ways to monetize their own work. People will generally pay for value. Large record labels are really no longer needed except to promote low value music which requires expensive videos to get noticed

dave is correct, i have heard several bigger name artists saying they know people are going to grab their tunes illegitimately but they don't care. all it does is make them more popular.

i have spent some good money (70+ dollars) to see some favorite bands live. and although i have purchased next to no CD's over the last couple years, 70 bucks is worth more then most bands entire repertoire.

but if it wasn't for me obtaining "pirated" copies i might have never heard of the bands in the same light. and most likely would not have got CD's for bands i can't trust especially since i dont have much money.

(but i'm a leecher kind of guy... no need to "share" files so i can get sued too xD)

[...] In any event, the Open Rights Group did suggest that the statistic, if believable, shows just how big the market place is and the need for an ‘all you can eat’ service. It’s a proposal that is similar to that of a Green Party MEP who suggested that there should be a flat rate on ISPs so as to legalize file-sharing. [...]

Dave, what on earth are you talking about? A decent marketing and distribution system actually generates revenue for an artist! What use is it for everyone to know and enjoy a particular song if they have no intention of ever buying it?

Do you think music appears from the ether or something? Artists are human beings, real people who have real bills to pay and mouths to feed. If you have no intention of paying for the works they have spent time and money on producing, then you are a thief, plain and simple.

There's another solution: Artists stop looking at filesharing as piracy, and start seeing us for what we are - the next solution for marketing and distributing. The entire copyright industry has become obsolete.
