The telcos refused to provide adequate services in these towns. It is only right that the towns take the initiative and start ISP's. Whether they can succeed is debatable, but the towns should at least be given the opportunity.

I am in NC and I am offended that these corporations want this kind of a protected status from the government. This is nothing but obstructionism on the part of corporations. They want the state of NC to protect their current business model and revenue.

This is not the state's job. I wrote both my local state representative in the house and local state senator about this bill yesterday. I told them to please vote against HB1252 and I hope they do it. Mr. Tarleton and Mr. Goss I hope will have some sense on this issue.

I don't live near either Wilson or Salisbury. However, I do not see why these municipalities should be prevented from building their own networks if they want to or need to.

The incumbent providers have a lot of infrastructure in place. However, I believe that Greenlight is intended to be paid for primarily from customer subscription revenue. Given that is the case I believe this is a good move on the part of the city of Wilson.

As a resident of Raleigh, NC and this entire things reeks of corruption. Large Corporations fighting each other for their own interest?

One question I have; is the new ISP "Greenlight" state-owned? If so, this is not good. What if they are subsidized by the Local/State/Fed Gov, and FORCE the private ISPs out price-wise? Now we have State operated, below-cost (taxes) ISP service. Starting to sound like China to anyone?

Anyways, I think that this bill should pass, and all the power/money should be in the hands of the people. If this really IS a "hometown business", then it should stay very local. The natural business of an ISP helps this scenario. Make the People profitable again, and stop taking orders from large companies!!

"...We, the undersigned private-sector companies and trade associations urge you to oppose HB1252, the so-called “Level Playing Field Act.” HB1252 is “level” only in the..."

For anyone who lives in NC I hope you do your share and fight this crap all the way. This is pure BS and I can not believe that these "pigs" would have the gall to prevent people from making their choice.

I wish our city had that much on the ball to put in some competition. There's only one broadband provider and I'm in the fifth largest city. Just for mediocre speeds, I pay 3/4th of what the bundled package with 250 HD stations and phone cost. There's no DSL,
