Thailand’s military-appointed government has blocked Internet users in the country from gaining access to YouTube and several other Web sites because of content that it says is offensive, officials said today.
“We have blocked YouTube because it contains a video insulting to our king,” said Winai Yoosabai, head of the censorship unit at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.
Thailand banned access to YouTube, a popular site for posting and sharing video clips, after the owner of the site, Google, refused to remove the video clip about the king, according to the communications minister, Sitthichai Pookaiyaudom.
The video clip, which is crude and amateurish and lasts less than a minute, depicts the king with clown features painted on his face, and with an image of feet pasted above his head, a highly insulting gesture in Thailand.
