The Pirate Bay honors the the King of Sweden

As usual, those eclectic cats over at the BitTorrent tracker site The Pirate Bay know how to make headlines, and this time it’s about their recent decision to give their Swedish King a “diploma”.

In a recent blog posting on The Pirate Bay site, they have announced that in the spirit of Swedish pride they have decided to honor the the King of Sweden for his “efforts in making Sweden famous globally when it comes to technology and culture.”

The Pirate Bay has certainly shaken up the world of content distribution many times over, and their “contributions” to technology and culture, though controversial, can not be understated.

Keeping in step with their love of the limelight, the “diploma” is a recongnition of their shared “goals,” congratulating their “joint efforts in making Sweden famous globally when it comes to technology and culture.”

As they note, the diploma, as pictured, is in Swedish, so they have been courteous enough to provide an English translation for us to read.

To the King of Sweden Carl XVI Gustaf,
We hearby give you this diploma as a sign of our appreciation.
We have in a great cooperation made remarkable progress in the fight for positioning Sweden as a prosperous nation regarding technology and culture.
In these progressive days we’ve spread more files than ever. We’ve made history. We now have the honour to report that The Pirate Bay now archives 200,000, by the citizens donated, documents of culture and we’re tracking more then 500 000 cultural treasures globally.

This is a new world record.

Their announcement concludes by requesting an audience with his majesty, the King of Sweden, or “…preferably the princess Madeleine.”

Judging by her appearance, I think I’d have to agree with them on that one.

The island nation debacle and now this I have lost all respect for the pirate bay. They are attention whores and do they really think an attempt to ingratiate themselves with the “king” is going to prevent them from eventually being shut down? Too bad they have a great tracker I would like to stop using it because of their childish actions.

I HAVE stopped using BT just about altogether……now I use newsgroups.

But I agree that TPB has lost it’s way. They are a site that helps to find copyrighted material for crying out loud! Do they actually think that this latest move will keep them from being shut down in the future?

If they believe that I have a bridge I want to sell them…..it is in HARLEM and in GREAT shape….and it will only cost them a few billion dollars!

    @ Psilaxs

I couldnt agree with you more. They just come across as some bratty kids who just love shoving peoples noses in the fact that they are seemingly above the law…..showboating if you will.

I hate their trackers though the number of seeders is always shitty though they do have some interesting finds every now and then.

    @ Meyou123
I almost switched after BT bought uTorrent as a sign of protest but the speeds of DL just cant be beat….

There is nothing wrong with them attempting to make their view heard in a current political debate that has been mainly one sided. Although they may be pushing for the opposite extreme of what the content industry wants they are at least giving some kind of a fight which is more then I can say for any of us. Why put down people that are fighting for certain rights fight for our side. Thats the problem with the current state of affairs in politics no one is willing to fight for what they believe in. Everyone’s just letting government screw them in the ass while their in bed with corporations. I say good on them for putting up a fight at least they have the balls to do so.

    @ Mountain Rage…

I agree. They come off poorly like kids whose parents are out of town for the weekend but at least you can say they put on one hell of a show.

@Mountian Range…I think you have it wrong about our views.

Nobody that I know here is saying that the folks at TPB should not fight for what they believe in but the REALITY …is that the TPB site is mainly about letting people share copyrighted material for free! No government I know is going to let that happen without a fight. Now I don’t like it but that is the way it is.

Also let’s not FORGET the people who TPB basically SCAMMED out of money by saying they were wanting to purchase an island for sharing files and setting up a safe haven basically for piracy and then later on said forget it! Do you think any of those people who gave to their “cause” got their money back? I don’t think so!

So their credibility is already tainted to me! If they REALLY want people to take them seriously and gain back some lost credibility…mabye giving money back to folks who gave it to them in good faith to buy an island would be a start! Either that or use the money for upgrading TPB servers instead of buying more beer!

Back on topic: Just trying to get on the good side of the king of Sweeden by giving him a piece of paper is not going to save them in the end. It will take a new mindset about copyright both in Sweeden and in the US before the old ways of enforcing copyright law in Sweeden and other parts of the world change.

OOps… I need my glasses changed..
