uTorrent version 1.6.1 build 488 STABLE is released

The popular BitTorrent client server gets a much needed update, especially in light of yesterdays reports of the remote exploit hack.

Today there is an update of the uTorrent BitTorrent client server available, it’s version 1.6.1 build 488 STABLE.

This is particularly important in light of yesterday’s news noting how the previous stable release was vulnerable to hackers who could infiltrate your PC and execute arbitrary code if a user opens a manipulated torrent tracker file.

The apparent “glitch” in the software was that torrent tracker fields may contain an “announce” field. Well, if this “announce” field is longer than 4800 bytes, an internal µTorrent buffer overflows, thereby allowing hackers to run their exploits.

This new stable release takes care of those concerns and adds a couple of new features that include an new encryption box being added to the speed guide, and the ability to select the upload or download speed for a torrent tracker through the right click menu.

Here’s the changelog for the new stable release.
