Watch out BitTorrent Inc., Azureus adds new content partner

A new press release from today announces that Azureus and Starz Media will join forces to release popular anime, sci-fi, horror, and comedy TV programming online.

It looks like the market for legitimate BitTorrent content distribution just got a little more crowded.

Azureus, the ever popular BitTorrent client server, and admitted personal favorite, has announced today that it is teaming up with Starz Media in a content partnership deal that will make a wide variety of video selections and genres available online.

This marks another coup for Azureus, specifically its Zudeo video content platform, having already secured a worldwide partnership deal with the UK’s BBC back in December of last year.

“With Starz Media, we continue to build upon our commitment to deliver a robust offering of genre based entertainment within an optimal viewing environment,” said Gilles BianRosa, CEO, Azureus.

Starz Media content that will be available on Zudeo later this year include, Street Fighter Alpha, Ghost in the Shell, Astroboy and Ninja Scroll, as well as Season 1 from the Masters of Horror series and Tripping the Rift.

“Through this partnership with Azureus, we hope to reach the millions of genre fans online and build upon the avid audience interested in our video titles and series,” said Marc DeBevoise, senior vice president, business development and strategy, Starz Media. “We’re excited about Azureus’ high resolution format and its potential.”

This makes for an interesting turn of events in tech evolving market of legitimate BitTorrent content distribution.

BitTorrent Inc. has virtually all the of the major Hollywood studios onboard, which include Viacom Inc.’s Paramount Pictures, News Corp.’s 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, Palm Pictures and Kadokawa Pictures USA.

It also has content deals inked with cable television networks G4, MTV Networks, VH1, SpikeTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, Logo, and others including Starz Media which has now made an arrangement with Azureus as well.

I think that in the end BitTorrent Inc. will be the inevitable victor, as it all really comes to down the selection and the variety of content being offered to consumers that matters most.

With the release of the new BitTorrent Inc. store expected to be later this month, I guess we’ll be seeing the battle begin soon enough.

Why is everyone trying to trash my bittorrent apps?

Did you know Bit Torrent bought in to establish their relationship with Warner Brothers? Bit Torrent and Azaureus are hampered in that their technology also serves extra-curricualar filesharing. The studios always move slow so they are making limited deals until something better comes along. Specifically the studios have always controlled distribution and will look for a way to do this as opposed to having to go thru third parties. Look for innovative companies like Solid State to pick up the slack soon in the pay for download business. My prediction is that we are involving into a short-term two-tier system: one for those who pay which of the entertainment business was smart should rguarantee faster better quality and cheaper downloads– versus the free system where quality isn’t guaranteed and time convenience isnt an issue. The end game will be a system in which people get anything they want for a cheap price…but it will take awhile for the entertainment business to wake up for that.
