Intel unveils new Teraflop chip

“A chip with 80 processing cores and capable of more than a trillion calculations per second (teraflop) has been unveiled by Intel.”

The BBC is reporting today about the unveiling by Intel of a new high speed processor with 80 processing cores and that is capable of performing more than a trillion calculations per second (teraflop).

Though not yet available for commercial use, the chip performs on a single piece of thumb-nail sized silicon that just 11 years ago required a PC with 10,000 chips inside to duplicate.

The challenge is to find a way to be able to program 80 processing cores simultaneously. The PS3 has 8, 7 of them usable, and standard PCs have up to 4.

But to take advantage of the extra processing power, programmers will need to devise a way to give instructions to each core that work in parallel with one another.

“It’s not too difficult to find two or four independent things you can do concurrently, finding 80 or more things is more difficult, especially for desktop applications.

“It is going to require quite a revolution in software programming.

“Massive parallelism has been the preserve of the minority – a few people doing high-performance scientific computing.

“But that sort of thing is going to have to find its way into the mainstream.”

“Our researchers have achieved a wonderful and key milestone in terms of being able to drive multi-core and parallel computing performance forward,” said Justin Rattner, Intel Senior Fellow and chief technology officer.

“It points the way to the near future when teraflops-capable designs will be commonplace and reshape what we can all expect from our computers and the internet at home and in the office.”

Possible uses of the new chip include: HD entertainment PCs, servers, handheld devices, artificial intelligence, instant video communications, photo-realistic games and real-time speech recognition.

i can feel drool edging towards the corners of my mouth…. O.o :)

Very over-rated. Most programs aren’t optomized for dual core processors what makes you think 80 cores will be worthwhile.

Not only that but these processors are nowhere near the processing power of any of todays chips. Its like putting 100 really stupid people against 1 really smart person in an intelligence test. 100 people can do a lot of simple problems quickly but 1 smart person can do a complicated problem faster tha 100 people looking at it at the same time.

Well i guess for the games and graphics(2d & 3d) people they should be doing what Sorevexed is doing droolin!! lol phalkon30 youmaybe right but due to the specialization process o the processors i.e one chip handlin a particular task i’d say that they would be me thinks faster than 1 processor…IMO
