Noted Cryptographer Speaks on DVD Security

Hollywood, which spends hundreds of millions of dollars making movies, is determined to protect its business. The sale of pirated digital content rakes in many millions of dollars. Many bright minds are at work cracking codes meant to secure DVDs. Paul Kocher is taking the wraps off a project that he and his team have worked on for six years, one they think could give Hollywood something it craves: movies that are nearly piracy-proof.

aul Kocher usually stays out of the limelight, which is probably a good place for a cryptographer to be. But his achievements make him hard to go unnoticed.

The thin, unassuming Kocher, 33, has already achieved a measure of fame for helping develop the technology that makes e-commerce secure. Now he’s ready to help Hollywood protect movies when they’re put on DVDs.

Kocher, president and chief scientist at the small, privately held San Francisco company he founded, Cryptography Research Inc., this week addressed the RSA Conference at Moscone Center, the largest gathering of the $10 billion computer security industry.
