With Sealand now giving them the cold-shoulder, the denizens of BitTorrent Piratedom have have pulled up anchor and gone looking elsewhere.
Talks with the “Prince” of Sealand have apparently gone nowhere, which was pretty much a foregone conclusion from the beginning in my opinion.
In addition to the fact that the Principality of Sealand it is not officially recognized by a large number of countries, it also has treaty with the UK in which it has pledged not to perform acts or deeds that in any way interfere with the interests of the United Kingdom.
So even from the start, the prospect of unadulterated freedom from copyright protection laws is a foregone conclusion to be an impossibility.
The initiative by piratebay has nothing to do with the Principality, is unrelated to any applications for inward investment which we are currently considering, and should not be considered in any way related to our State or our recent call for inward investment applications.
I think the real motive behind the effort is simply publicity for their site, and when it comes to publicity nobody does it better than The Pirate Bay.
I mean honestly, think about it for a moment. Is Torrentspy, Mininova, isoHunt, or any other BitTorent tracker site for that matter EVER covered by the media in the manner that The Pirate Bay is?I think the only other BitTorent tracker site out there that’s even been uttered from the lips of international news organizations is MAYBE the long defunct EliteTorrents.org after that whole Star Wars 3 screener fiasco.
Other than that, it’s constant news of government raids, international intrigue, retaliation against ISPs and other entities, the list goes on and on.
One respondent to a story on Digg said it best, something to the effect that all he ever sees anymore are stories about piracy, Apple, or The Pirate Bay it seems. Honestly, what other BitTorent tracker site gets anywhere near the press coverage that those cats over at The Pirate Bay do?
Recent events are no exception.
Having been snubbed by the Royal Family of Sealand, The Pirate Bay has apparently set sail in search for more friendly waters.
With some $20,000 USD in donations now in hand, it has begun scouting out other locales to set up a copyright-free kingdom.
They write:
The latest update is that we’ve broken the $20.000 barrier! It’s amazing! Also, we’re hereby officially telling you all that we have to go for plan B – buying our own island and trying to claim it as our own nation. The Sealand government has not been answering e-mails lately and we take that as a sign of not being willing to discuss our venture.
We have a couple of islands we have our eyes set on. We will come back in a few days with which one we’re deciding on buying – and the price for it.
Also, we’ve noticed that the whole idea of claiming our own nation has become a huge issue – really serious for some people and we really love the spirit and guts of these people who are active in the new sub-communities that has formed through our project. The most active breakout-group from our project seems to be http://freenationfoundation.org and we will try to support these guys as well – but we need to take action and focus on our own initial project to start with. There are so many people with so much will and ideas that we simply do not have the man power to just help them out – and since we can’t just hand off a project like this we need to take the path we set out from start.
We will get back soon with more information on the island; as said. This experience is amazing!
What sites they are actively “scouting” hasn’t really been confirmed but, I have reported on the

ololo………yeah the “crack team” of coders here at ZP hooked it up…
My question is….Would $20000 even be enough to:
1. buy your own island
2. set up a web network on said island
3. keep the authorities from comming after you…wherever you are.
Seems like a pipe dream to me. I wish them luck though.
Simple: they start hiring for a private army. I’d imagine they are plenty of experienced fellow pirates that would volunteer for such an operation. I know I would.
