Blu-ray gets cracked

Another one bites the dust, as Blu-ray joins its HD-DVD brother as well as other encrypted forms media that have seen their security features “cracked and hacked” by industrious individuals bent on keeping content free for everyone.

It’s no secret that the HD-DVD disc has been cracked wide open, the infamous muslix64, identity and whereabouts unknown, instantly being made a target of both admiration and disgust.

Well, now Sony has headaches of its own, as Blu-ray, the HD-DVD alternative, has also been cracked.

This time its a person named “Janvitos” who claims to have beaten Blu-ray’s AACS encryption methods.

He claims to have been able to successfully implement the same sort of key-grabbing known-plaintext attack as muslix64 used to crack HD DVD, and doing so by simply using a raw encrypted data file instead of a Blu-ray disc or drive (For historical purposes, “Lords of War” is the Blu-ray movie that he cracked)

He has also helped release a Blu-ray disc backup utility that can be found here. Oddly enough it appears that he had some help on the utility, as muslix64 of HD-DVD backup fame is the poster.

Here’s Blu-ray backup in action……..

It’s still too early to tell how effective the Blu-ray backup utility is but, either way its still a first step towards eventual “ripping and burning” freedom for all.

Yes but he should have waited until Blu-Ray was more widely adopted. It will be a shame if Blu-Ray goes the way of betamax.
