The Pirate Bay “WIKI’s” up locations to move to

The venerable Swedish pirates scout out possible places to run their servers from.

It’s been in the news recently how The Pirate Bay has sought to purchase the sovereign “country” of Sealand from which to run their servers out of, and in that spirit it has solicited alternative suggestions as well.

So far the donations have totaled a little over $13,000 USD, a figure that falls far short of the reported $65 million to $2 billion USD asking price for the island.

Coupled with the problem of donations is the fact that it may not clearly be as sovereign as has been suggested. It’s been noted that both Germany and the United refuse to recognize it’s legitimacy as well as the fact that it must can not perform acts or deeds that in any way interfere with the interests of the United Kingdom. So much for unadulterated freedom from copyright laws.

Hence, the question begs, “where else could they go?”

Well the have a wiki-pedia page up that is discussing all the possible locations.

Ladonia

Ladonia is a area in the southwest of Sweden. As of now, it is essentially abandoned land which simply houses 3 art sculptures, and was created in protest of Swedish authorities who wished to remove them. However, Ladonia is not recognized by any other state, and there is no legal basis for calling it a state.

Sovereignty

“It was in the year of 1996 that Ladonia rised and entered into a new form of time and space. On the 2nd of June the country proclaimed its independence from Sweden – if it ever was occupied; the country was hardly ever discovered.”

Isla Montuosa, Panama

Isla Montuosa’ is a remote island located near Panama in central America.

The island has undisturbed biodiversity and an ancient prehistoric sacred/burial site.

Sovereignty

“There are few limitations on what foreigners can buy in terms of real estate in Panama. Property within six miles of international borders is out of bounds, and there are restrictions on some island and waterfront property unless it is situated in one of the Tourism Zones. “

Ernst Thälmann Island

Unclear/interesting East German/Cuban sovereignty status, with enough money, dedication and Cuban/German collaboration, a deal might be possible.

In 1972 Cuban leader Fidel Castro made the island a gift to East Germany. The island was named after German Communist politician Ernst Thälmann (April 16, 1886—August 18, 1944), who was the leader of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) during much of the Weimar Republic and was arrested by the Gestapo in 1933 and held in solitary confinement for eleven years, before being shot on Adolf Hitler’s orders in 1944. The gift of Castro was always seen as a symbolic gesture rather than a concession. After German reunification in 1990, Germany made no claims for the territory.

Now honestly, I really don’t think any of this will ever happen but, it would be nice to have an island getaway at our fingertips.

I wish them luck but frankly it sounds like TPB got together and actually thought of trying to buy a place where they would be free to upload copyrighted material without persecution of any kind….I don’t even know if that is possible. But I do wish them luck just the same.
