New BRAVIA Internet Video Link device will allow new Sony “Internet video-ready” TVs to access free video content on the internet with the push of a button.
The ongoing Consumer Electronics Show(CES) in Vegas continues to produce exciting new announcements from electronics corporations the world over.
In addition to the recent news that Netgear will partner with BitTorent Inc. to stream content from PCs to consumers HDTVs, Sony Electronics has announced a feature for new TV models that will allow users to access free internet video content with the push of a button on the remote control.
Called the BRAVIA Internet Video Link, it will allow most of its new televisions to stream internet video content, including HD, from sources to include AOL, Yahoo!, Grouper, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and also Sony’s BMG Music.
“This initiative will not only enhance the entertainment experience for owners of Sony Internet video-ready HDTVs, but also reinforce our defining strategy of providing more personalization of products and content for consumers that no other company can offer,” according to Stan Glasgow, president and chief operating officer of Sony Electronics.
The BRAVIA Internet Video Link will be a separate device connected to a users broadband connection and attached to the back of a new line of “internet video-ready” TVs.
The device will stream content without any subscription charges or fees, the only cost being the initial purchase of the unit.
“We are shifting content experience from a lean-forward PC exercise to the comfort of the big screen TV in your living room,” said Randy Waynick, senior vice president of the Home Products Division at Sony Electronics. “Internet video will clearly be the next step in the evolution of high-definition television, giving users more control over the content they view.”
Content is said to include “… Internet video, music videos, movie trailers, user generated videos and RSS feeds” but, it’s unclear if that means content from ANY site or simply from those that are preapproved.
If the BRAVIA Internet Video Link is able to stream content from sites like Guba or Daily Motion, then it would be a tremendous step forward for the streaming of video content into the living room but, if it would be huge bust if you were limited to restricted content and sites.
The chance to use sites like TV LInks for instance, as a “virtual cable provider” would make it must have component for everyone, myself included, and would compel multitudes of people to buy these new “Internet video-ready” Sony TVs.
But, as always seemt the case, I’m sure it will have a fair share of “safeguards” incorporated within the new setup to prevent the streaming of any unauthorized content.
As for what models will support the BRAVIA Internet Video Link, it will initially be supported by Sony’s BRAVIA S-series flat-panel LCD HDTVs, which will include the KDL-46S3000, KDL-40S3000, KDL-32S3000 and KDL-26S3000 models.
These new “Internet video-ready” TVs will be available this spring, with news of when and at what cost the BRAVIA Internet Video Link will be available to follow soon thereafter.
