Download of the Day: “The Last Man on Earth”

Similar to the movie “Omega Man,” starring Charleton Heston, the movie chronicles the lone survivor of a devastating world-wide plague.

Public Domain Torrents has a wide selection of movies, cartons, and more to choose from and to both freely and legally download.

One of the more interesting movies I came across recently was “The Last Man on Earth.”

Filmed in black and white and produced in 1964, it stars the legendary Vincent Price as Dr. Robert Morgan, the sole survivor of world-wide plague that wiped out humanity.

He supposedly acquired an immunity to the plague’s bacterium years ago while living in Central America. In his estimation it was the result of bat bite he received in his youth.

Those that have fallen to the plague soon leave their graves and begin hunting at night in search of human blood. Though admittedly, considering he is supposedly the last person left, it’s unclear why they don’t simply starve to death but, the movie’s good nonetheless.

The film is considered to be one of the primary influences for George Romero in his landmark series of zombie cult-thriller movies, and a must-see for any of you who enjoy his work.

Here’s what a few others had to say about it:

Good Movie. Certainly on a par with The Omega Man (perhaps better) which is incorrectly considered the first film version of the novel “I am Legend”. Not only does this movie predate Hestons film it is also much closer to the source material. Of course the most famous film to be (very) loosely based on that story is also on this site – Night of the Living Dead. Hollywood is currently producing a new version which is apparently following the book closely, but how good it turns out one thing is for sure, the lead actor probably wont do as well in the role as Vincent Price does in this (Again, much better then Heston). In this, Price really brings out the emotional side of the character showing his lonliness and despair.

This movie is an absolute classic. Vincent Price plays the “last man on earth” who spends his days trying to survive in a world full of vampire-zombie things. With a great twist at the end. Highly recommended.

Moreover, the film is definitely worth watching.

The site makes the movie available in a variety of formats as well, the .AVI BitTorrent link is by far the quickest and best method but, it offers a PSP MP4, an iPOD MP4, and a Divx PDA option if you wish to watch it on a platform other than your PC or TV.

Yup I have this one and it came from that same site. I saw this movie awhile ago on TV and wanted my own copy.

It shows desolation really well and what being alone could be like and I could imagine keeping the generators full and having only records to play because the radio and TV stations were gone. Then after a long while he meets that Dog who runs away the only sign of real life.

Remember that garlic and fresh mirrors will keep the zombies away and in the post plague world you can just walk right into a store and choose the ones you want without paying.

I think its actually better than “The Omega Man”

Strange Someone else was telling me about this movie about a week ago. Ive seen Omega Man (isnt there a remake in the works?) and I thought it was pretty good. I’ll have to check this out. I would like to recomend a movie too. Perhaps next week you could do a family type film. Recently I got “Escape from Witch Mountain” a great Disney movie from the 70’s. A movie for the whole family that is really hard to find or perhaps the Apple Dumplin Gang. Both great films for the holiday season.

Sure will do a “family flic”……..Loved “Escape from Witch Mountain” BTW…..dam thats an old school flic was like 6 or something when it came out.

Im actually gonna try to find that one right now…..THX Mels for the idea..:)

My supermarket has a display with Disney movies and I recently got the Escape to Witch Mountain and Return to Witch Mountain double feature on one disk.

As for Apple Dumplin’ Gang and other Disney live action movies like it they seem to be hard to find on the net. I’d like to see The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes again. I saw most of it but had to miss the end and never saw what happened on that quiz show.
