Despite piracy and P2P, Casino Royale wins big at the box office

Despite the movie’s presence on P2P and file-sharing networks, Casino Royale took in huge profits at both the UK and US box offices this past weekend.

A Russian camcorder version first appeared last Thursday, “Casino.Royale.2006.TS.RUS.XviD-KZ” but, the audio was of course in Russian.

Then on Friday another camcorder copy appeared, “Casino.Royale.TELESYNC.XViD-PUKKA,” which is thought to have originated in Italy.

According to internet monitoring company Envisional Casino Royale had been illegally downloaded some 200,000 times. How the data was achieved is unclear but, I’m sure the number has since risen dramatically.

Making a ironic quip about what the fabled British super spy is up against, Dr David Price, head of piracy intelligence at Envisional said: “In the face of this international conspiracy, Bond is really up against it.”

He goes on to note:

There are now several million active digital pirates. Many of them are ordinary families that have got into the habit of downloading the latest episodes of American TV hits. And they don’t have any qualms about using file sharing networks to copy new movies without paying.

What’s left out in the details however, is that despite the so-called “international conspiracy” of piracy the movie made huge profits over the weekend in both the US and the UK.

In the US it grossed $40,833,156, USD, the second highest opening ever for a Bond movie, placing it a slight second behind the movie “Happy Feet”(?) for the weekend.

In the UK “Casino Royale” took in approximately $25,524,511 USD, which was also a strong showing considering the population differential between the US and the UK.

This all occurs in the context of the MPAA’s perennial moaning and groaning that P2P and file-sharing networks are killing the movie industry as we know it. Yet, they refuse to acknowledge what everyone else already knows: good movies made good profits.

Continually bombarded with force-fed cinema trash like “Hollywood Homicide,” ” The Black Dahlia,” ” Miami Vice,” you know the names, its no wonder that the box office sales are in decline.

I don’t give a shit about this story but calling Black Dahlia “force-fed cinema trash” reveals the author’s ignorance on the subject of film.

subject of film? Have u seen “Black Dahlia?” Maybe “force-fed cinema trash” is a bit strong but the movie is absolutely horrible. I had to stop watching after like 10 minutes it was so terrible………Miami Vice and Hollywood Homicide were the same deal and I could name a thousand other movies recently released that were yak-fests as well.

Dont need to be an expert to have an opinion that a movie sucks do we? Let me know what u think when they roll out Rocky 6 here pretty soon…. :)

Uhhhh downloads are not the (sole) reason for sagging bofo nor are bad movies. There have always been bad movies. Look to the 60’s and 70’s when B movie’s were turned out left and right. Now they were really horrible but people were too busy humping in the back seat at the drive-in to notice. Now the really bad shit goes straight to video.

Furthermore Hollywood makes some damn good movies these days. Its easy to pic ones you don’t like. Its like if I turn on a country station Im sure to hate the tune so Im smart enough to not put that station on pre-set. Pay attention and you will not waste your life watching crap or downloading it for that matter. DVD sales and the home theater are why people do not have to go to the movies anymore. Its all a big hassle. High ticket prices over priced hot dogs and cokes some jerk off talking on his/her cell phone till you want to set their hair on fire ( you almost do it but burning hair really stinks!) so on and so forth. Downloads do count for a small ammount of the pie but the elephant in the room is the all mighty DVD rental.
