The success of the open-source movement combined with the legal issues surrounding software programmers and the rights to their code has an indirect, but in my opinion, a huge impact on copy-protection laws in this country; not to mention, a subtle influence on public understanding and opinion on copy-protection in general. But I’m not going to sit here and type up a four-page piece on this topic. Instead, there is a great story at Salon.com, entitled “Code free or die,” about programming god Richard Stallman and the author of “Free as in Freedom,” Sam Williams.
