MP3.com now offers FREE legal music downloads

After settling copyright infringement claims with major record labels long ago, and then being purchased by CNET Networks Inc. in 2003, it has now begun to allow users the ability to share music and videos with the permission of independent artists.

Okay, so there isn’t exactly any Eminem or Rage Against the Machine available for download but, its FREE and has a number of independent artists you can take a look at and share with others.

You can also play tracks and videos from established artists after viewing a quick advertisement but are not allowed to download them. Keep in mind though that you can always use easy to find recording software to rip the music or videos of artists from the site if you so desire.

When it comes to the downloading of music by independent artists its fairly simple. You choose a genre of music you’d like to check out and then simply click the “download” tab next to it as you can see below.

For listening to more established artists simply click the “Free Music” tab at the top of the menu and then scroll down or search for the artist you desire.

Here are a few screenshots of what occurred when I selected to play Eminem’s “You Don’t Know” track. First the ad plays, and then the song.

Now again, you can easily rip the tracks from the site if you wish but, using P2P or file-sharing networks is much easier for grabbing established artists like Eminem.

MP3.com also has a wide variety of music videos to watch, none of which I found available for download. But, I guess who really downloads music videos anyways right?

Moreover, the newly revamped MP3.com site is a good way to check out new and upcoming artists without all the pain of searching OINK or other BitTorrent torrent tracker sites to find new music to listen to.
