Credit card firms cut off AllofMP3.com

Visa International and MasterCard Inc have stopped accepting credit card transactions for purchases of online music made on a Russian Web site accused of selling music illegally, officials for both payment systems said Wednesday.

San Francisco-based Visa asked member banks not to process purchases from AllofMP3.com as of Sept. 1, said Simon Barker, a spokesman for the company.

“The action Visa has taken is in line with legislation passed in Russia and with basic international copyright and intellectual property norms,” Barker said.

MasterCard, the No. 2 payment system in the world behind Visa, ceased accepting credit card purchases on the Web site in early August, said Chris Harrall, a spokesman for the Purchase, N.Y.-based company. “MasterCard does not tolerate the use of its network for illegal activity,” Harrall said.

Charles Martin, a Washington-based spokesman for Moscow-based Mediaservices, which owns AllofMP3, confirmed that Visa had suspended payment processing services on the site, but he was not aware of any other payment vendors who had decided to do so.

Wow. that will certainly have an effect on sales. This will be interesting to see what happens and if they can get another company to support purchases.

I had this problem and had no idea why it was not working. I had to go to another site to purchase ‘credits’ and then return to allofmp3 to purchase music. Then when I hit $3 they wouldn’t let me get more music. I switched to Rhapsody for one setup (it’s a Samsung) and I use iTunes for another (iPod Nano) so I guess I’m pretty happy with those services for now in lieu of not being able to purchase more music at allofmp3. Sucks for them…it will definitely affect sales.

Wow… amorefelina do I understand you correctly? are you seriously saying that now that you can no longer use allofmp3 properly you have just gone to rhapsody and itunes!?!? so you reward the RIAA for their success on convincing visa/mastercard to not allow our right to buy a service that is legal (in russia) ?

no offense personally but seriously that is just outright stupid.
