Is Electronic Arts going after BitTorrent users?

A BitTorrent user and member of the forums over on Destructoid claims that Electronic Arts, the video game publisher, sent his ISP a letter alleging he downloaded a torrent tracker of NHL ’07.

The guy who received the letter from his ISP, and supposedly at the behest of EA, had this to say:

“I’m not sure if this has been shown anywhere else, I certainly wasn’t aware of it. I had thought it was just giant organizations like RIAA and MPAA that were watching Bittorrent. But if it was going to be any game company, it was going to be EA. I got a letter from my ISP this morning (Comcast) informing me that EA had sent them the IP address of my network as downloading a torrent of NHL 07. I haven’t heard of them suing anyone yet, but they’re keeping an eye on it apparently.”

His claim cannot be independently verified but, it does stand to reason that it is true, especially in light of recent events concerning Final Fantasy XII. Final Fantasy XII was recently leaked onto torrent trackers sites everywhere a month before its scheduled release date. This no doubt left EA with a bitter taste in its mouth, if not a newfound desire to crack down on the BitTorrent users sharing their games over torrent tracker sites.

Whether or not they will choose to follow in the fateful steps of the RIAA and start suing anyone and everyone who even hints at illegally downloading remains to be seen. Grandmothers everywhere beware.

    NFSU2FREAK:

    Yes were safe. Thank God politics haven’t gone completely down the Sh*tter. In Canada companies can’t just sue you we have too many rights. Look at criminals? And as for Shaw Cable they are protecting our rights so far by not releasing our info because of our MANY privacy laws.. So far it looks like if you bootleg especially for profit you’ll get caught convicted and then companies can sue you. Even then you can’t squeeze blood out of a stone. Collection agencies from Ontario and beyond will haunt you for their money and possibly get the Sheriff after you but after you serve your sentence the justice system will leave you alone. (Unless you owe the government then your screwed) lol

    Well you cant really boycott either since they are really political Organizations but their clients that they represent are being boycotted. Tower Records just went bankrupt and they continue to see a freefall in CD prices. Same with the MPAA as people are getting choosier about when where and what movies they watch.

    @VAMPYRE

    that would assume consumers could actually boycott things. Look how well the boycott against the RIAA/MPAA is going.
