A quick step guide that will show you how to rip audio from MySpace and any other site that allows you to stream music on your PC.
(Don’t want to hassle? SuperMedia has a product available for $47 that works.)
There are many audio files available for playback on the venerable MySpace site yet, very few are available as downloads. There’s a number of ways to bypass this problem and I will cover two of best the methods here for you to use, the first being the easiest.
A. FreeMusicZilla
B. Audacity
FreeMusicZilla
1. Download and install FreeMusicZilla.
2. Open FreeMusicZilla, visit the desired MySpace page, and play the song you want to download. Whatever music track you select will then automatically be grabbed by FreeMusicZilla.

3. Select the grabbed music track and press the DOWNLOAD button. Your download should then begin. Make sure you begin downloading the track before the “Leech Timeout” counter runs out otherwise you’ll have to refresh the page.
EXAMPLE:
In the picture below I used the MySpace page of my buddy DJ Destructo Bunny. He’s a local up and coming hip-hop artist and I urge you to show some support if you like what you hear by either buying a track or two or by trying to check out one of his upcoming shows.
NOTE: FreeMusicZilla places your downloads in the location “C:downloads” by default.
Audacity
1. Download and install Audacity.
2. Now we need to install a LAME MP3 encoding driver so you can save tracks in the .mp3 format.
First download the driver, which you can do here. It’s in ZIP file format, so for those of you who are unfamiliar with what ZIP files are, there’s a guide here at Zeropaid you can take a look at.

Now drag and drop the driver in the location shown below, “C:/WINDOWS/system.”

3. Select “Wave Out Mix” as the audio recording device.
EXAMPLE:
Now it’s time to find some audio tracks to rip.
A good friend of mine is the lead-singer for a band called The Wagon here in San Diego and has been kind enough to allow me to use his band’s music on MySpace for this tutorial.
The image below is of the band’s page. Notice how the top two songs are available for download and the bottom two are not. We’re going to rip the second song from the top titled “End of Summer,” a personal favorite of mine not to mention timely with Summer drawing to a close.
Now with Audacity and the MySpace page open, click the “record button” on Audacity as shown below and then quickly press the “play button” on the End of Summer track. The track should begin to play and thereby be displayed as eloquent peaks and valleys of music in the Audacity track window.
When the song is finished playing press the “stop button” on Audacity. This will of course stop the recording and allow us to go back and edit the song.
The reason we need to edit the song is because there will be periods of silence in both the beginning and end of our recording. This silence is the delay in reaction time it took for us to both start and stop the process.
Using the scrollbar on the bottom of the track window, scroll back to the beginning of the recording as pictured below.
Using the mouse place your cursor as close to the beginning of the song as possible, then click and drag it all the way to the left and release. We have just selected the silence in the front of the track, which we will now discard by pressing the “delete button” on your keyboard.
Now we need to do the same thing for the end of the recording. To do so simply scroll to the end of the track and then select and delete the silence as you did with the beginning of the track. It’s that easy.
From the “File” tab select “Export as MP3″ as shown below.
It will then prompt you to select a name to save it as, which in this case will be “End of Summer.”
After clicking on the “Save” tab, it will then ask you to “locate the LAME MP3 encoder” we just installed.
Hopefully you remember where we just put it but, just in case I’ll show you where to go.

Once this is done it’ll begin to encode the track and turn it into an MP3, the music file type necessary to play on your iPod or whatever media player of choice.
And with this ladies and gentleman the track is ready to go.

Admittedly, configuring the Audacity program to perform as necessary initially takes a little while, but once this is done future recordings or “ripping” of audio files will be a breeze.

That’s a really useful guide. Thanks xtc.
Im on a mac trying to use audacity can anyone help
fail.
True that. :]
You’ll need Soundflower.
- Install Soundflower.
- Reboot Mac.
- Start soundflower
- Klick on flower in menu, dropdown, make sure under Soundflower (2ch) “Built-in Output” is selected (If not, you won’t here anything, but will record.) Your volume button is out of order now.
- Go to your mac’s Audio Midi Setup, put on the right side Standart-Output on “Soundflower 2ch”
- Go to Audacity Preferences, in Audio I/O you select in Record “Soundflower 2ch” and in Channels “Stereo”. (how to export as mp3 you read elsewhere)
- Restart Audacity
- Start Audacity – now every sound you play on your computer, will be recorder. Just play the title while you record in Audacity.
Should you have problems with your sound output later on, make sure put in Audio Midi Setup everthing back to basic – “bulit in output”
Everyone Digg this this is a good guide and more people need to know about it.
That’s sweet. Im still waitin for my tutorial though. Oh yeah this is off topic but would anyone know where to find the Godfather PSP video game torrent? Im dying to get it!
I love how you’re telling someone not to ask about illegal software when you’re on a page about stealing music!
@BDSKATE…You can’t make requests for illegal software on ZP!
Very Cool! This is just what I’ve been looking for
Oh sorry (My friend wanted me to tell him where to find it)
Why would you do that? The quality is sucky.
I just found a software which can get music from myspace fast and easily with high quality.
Its named Streaming Audio Recorder. Hope this can help you.
@davetheman…….how else can u get a track that you couldnt get otherwise?
@peterstroker You can use http://www.mediaconverter.org to get things off of youtube. it’ll let you take the video or make it an mp4, wma, mp3 whatever you want. It says there is a limit of four a day but just exit the browser for more. All you need is the video url. This is a simple way to get things off youtube w/o having to record.
Very misleading title. This is not about ripping at all but rather just recording what’s playing on your computer. I’ve used this method as a last resort since the beginning using SoundForge. Very disappointed that I still can’t rip the exact file from YouTube and MySpace. tle change of this guide would be appropriate. Your efforts are appreciated though.
One note to those using this method: if computer sounds are enabled (ie: mouse clicks etc.) those will also be recorded. Disable computer sounds first through the Control Panel while recording.
Soulxtc I think a ti
Help!?
I don’t have the “wav out mix” as an option. I’ve got microphone phone line line in CD/Video In Aux/Line in 2 Stereo mix and mono mix…But no wav out mix. Do I need to download that from somewhere? If so could someone please tell me where?
Faeriel what you need to do is select stereo mix.
The information was very very helpful
Help!? Me too please…
Can´t click on the drop down menu at all It´s all grey! So i really can´t choose the “Wave Out Mix” or any other applications. Have checked if i have the right version of the program and it looks that i have. (1.2.4b) have tried the most recent ones too but no success..
Do i need some sort of plug-in or anything to make it “accessible*? (the drop down menu)
Whether “wave out mix” is available or something like it depends on your soundcard and driver.
Secondly recording an MP3 (or other compressed audio) over the internet and recording it gets you MP3 quality even though you record to a wave file. Re-encoding to MP3 makes the quality even worse.
NOT the same as downloading the file.
Brilliant my quality only went down a bit. I couldnt find the plug-in so I had to use the stereo mix. None-the-less it came out awesome sounding almost like the original really really close to it. This would be the only time I’d resort to something like this. These band ‘Everlasting Lie’ that I got the song from are Japanese street bands and its almost impossible to get their music yet they’re so talented. Thanks a lot for helping to keep piracy moving and to get a persons favorite rare song.
you don’t need to use audicity. i just drag the audio file from free music zilla to my music folder. then i can drag it into itunes
my music zilla wont grab the track =/
does anyone know why??
i always wondered when this info would show up somewhere. hopefully more people will catch on now.
Ok, so I downloaded Music Zilla. I open the program but when I go to a myspace page, the music won’t play at all and I cant download it. If I close music Zilla, then the music starts playing… Whats up??
I did the audacity thing. Yesterday it worked fine. Today i tried to record a new song, but now it only records silence. I am 100% sure everything is how it’s supposed to be and i’m 100% sure it worked yesterday. I use vista. Any help? :s
None of these work for me.
it won’t let me select for the wave out mix thingie like nothing shows for that part
FreeMusicZilla works for me for Imeem.
The provided link worked great! Thank YOU!
None of this works. I tried the sites too and nothing works. Wtf??
I am using a Mac can anyone help me get music off of myspace and onto my computer or iTunes
Seriously guys this site works perfectly, it’s amazing:
file2hd.com
Use it.
Free Music Zilla doesn’t work anymore for myspace or if you’re using an updated web browser.
Dont try File2HD.com It is useless since Myspace updated the players.
i downloaded FreeMusicZilla when i would play the song on myspace, it did not show up in the FreeMusicZilla window. So basically FreeMusicZilla did not grab any song that i chose.
I then tried the Audacity
I went through everything and then when it made me to chose the Wave Out Mix turns out that is not an option.
Someone please help ive been depending on File2hd.com
now im STUCK
is there anything similar to this for mac?
SOMEONE PLEASE HELP
im trying to download tracks and cuz of “shitspace’s” new music thing i cant use file2hd, obv
but i really need some music of it
the CD’s arent made anymore and i cant even find the on ebay!!!
help!!!!!
Mac users try Wiretap Pro. It is so easy to rip stuff off Myspace..
I know there are a lot of options to do this, but don’t get hung up on Audacity if you have another method to get this done. I’m getting really tired of having to record in Audacity for the entire length of the song.
and I found this Rip music from MySpace
free music zilla no longer works with myspace. File2hd is crap and now a scam, asks you for money constantly.
Ok I did this but my recording sounds HORRIBLE! Any suggestions?
While using Opera, Flock or Firefox, go to the website which music you want to get, hit play and what a few seconds, until the bar on the player ( if available ) shows the whole song loaded, if not, wait a few minutes until the song begins to play.
Later, type %temp% on any window ( not the browser window, choose a system window ), hit enter, and you will see a list of files, just sort them by Modified, and, look for a file called ” flaXXXXX.tmp “, install ” unlocker ” which can be downloaded from anywere, give a left click on the file, choose unlocker, let unlocker COPY the file wherever you want, download ” FLV audio extractor “, open that file on FLV AE and save it as mp3.
Seems complcated but works anywhere.
Awesome, the audicity way works. I’ve had this program for a while but I didn’t know you could do that. I couldn’t do the wave line thing so i picked ‘ mono mix ‘ and it recorded awesomely.
“not the browser window, choose a system window”
???
Right I figured out where the system window is…
Typed %temp%. -> Opened my temp-folder and… surprise! There is no fla……tmp file …
hey guys!!…..well this doesnt seem to work anymore!!!…..got any other ideas which can be used…i tried file2hd and MySpace Mp3 gopher too….nothing seems to work with the updated music player on myspace…..please try to find some way!!
It TOTALLY still works. I just moments ago used Audacity to “rip” some tracks from Myspace.
If you use Audacity (beta) v1.3.8 as I just did, be sure to set your source in that little drop down box to “Stereo Mix.”
I may have tweaked a couple other settings. Play your song in Myspace, and you’ll see the VU meter in Audacity start to jump. BAM!
Use XP for this. Vista is teh sux!!!!!!!!!!1111
Listen i like totally suck at using audacity….which box are you referring to and how do i start the recording…i tried to make it work but i just lost patience….if you could give me a step by step process id appreciate it a lot…..
thanks a ton in advance….and sorry for being like totally dumb…..lol
Im using XP….i open audacity 1.3.8 then i start recording in audacity….and then hit play in the my space song….but my VU meter does not move!!!…..whats the problem…..and i cant find the box where im supposed to make the adjustments!!!
help pls!!
For audio off the internet… After you download Audacity and have it open, go to edit>preferences>directories
you might need to “choose” a location for your temp files… I just clicked ok for the preloaded location and the meter finally started to move (yeah!) then once I had the music clip all nice and perfect, I realized I couldn’t export an MP3, (boo) so I went back to edit>preferences> libraries and i downloaded the LAME MP3 library dll (just follow directions to where to save). i had Audacity still open and it didn’t give me an mp3 or wav file save option, so i think i saved and closed the aup file, and when i reopened it and tried export again, it finally gave me the .wav option. This I imported into itunes and … now life is good again… good luck!
a few more comments… I’m using XP and Firefox 3 for the browser. Also to answer the question about the stereo mix location go to tracks>add new>stereo track. this will give you two tracks in the middle area where you see the wav file. The quality is actually pretty good considering you’re ripping an mp3 to a wav and then likely back to mp3. Hey, if you can’t get the music anywhere else, you gotta do what you gotta do…
i just downloaded audacity but my toolbars are all disabled. what should i do?
and i downloaded audacity 1.3.8 and i cant get anything to rip. detailed instructions would be appreciated
doesnt work anymore
FreeMusicZilla doesn’t but Audacity still works!
FreeMusicZilla deletes it’s output destination folder after it closes. I found this out to my cost when I set my desktop as the destination folder and it deleted all my recent downloads that were located there. I lost about 2 gigs of stuff……
Audacity does NOT still work, to whoever said that it does. Stop wasting people’s time.
Yes it does….used just a few minutes ago.
How so? It’s a free program that captures your PCs audio output, hence there’s no way it cannot work.
The only way is if a user doe not how to run it properly.
@M: Stop spreading misinformation! Audacity still works FINE!
Soulxtc is right. Audacity records straight from your sound card. As long as your sound card can play it, Audacity can record it!
how do you get it to work? mine records from my mic on my computer and the sound quality is shit.
There isn’t a wave out mix in the 1.3 beta version of audacity. Help plz.
audacity works depending on the soundcard and drivers installed on your computer. if its good enough, itll be able to record streaming audio, if not, the toolbars are disabled.
it wont grab anything off myspace?
The WAVE OUTPUT selection part is greyed out on my computer….. I can not select the recording device…. can anyone tell me why?
If you’re wondering why you have no wave out option, this will help you out:

Thanks for the really useful info!
ZeroPaid shoud’ve informed this “small” detail in their tutorial, because now I have just installed a program and plugins and God know what was the other thing I’ve installed and none of them has a single use for me. Audacity won’t even record my voice through my mic.
tried it on soundcloud.com hoping to get a track off of there so i could put it on a cd. used free music zilla and waited like 10 mins to download and at the end it said “failed”. ughhh. all of the above=fail! lol.
Audacity works on EVERYTHING!
god love you, I spent some hours before I found this. Completely helpful!
