Don’t you hate leechers! Maybe you can do something about it. The controversy continues to rage as leeching remains widespread in all of the most popular programs. Here’s what I think are some of the most important arguments/points.
#1 Leeching could eventually destroy p2p (it’s simple math – if things continue the way they are, the network will be flooded with search requests that never find what they’re looking for – like Vladd44 said in WinmX – leeches!!! forum – “My concerns with leeches is about the wasted strain they are on OpenNap servers and p2p networks in general”)
#2 Sharing/Uploading is next to effortless for most people. Don’t convince yourself that you’re doing someone much of a ‘favor’ by giving them something you originally downloaded from a p2p program. Don’t police your uploads – you do have better things to do – trust me, but rather take pride in how much you have uploaded; have fun with it.
#3 Newbies should be expected to understand how to share and to find something to share. If you’re downloading from an office etc,… share the first file and every file you download (or bring some files with you to share). Keep in the spirit of file sharing. Couldn’t it be easily written into a program’s code, to allow for a short (1 week?) initial period where you wouldn’t need to share?
#4 Human nature is selfish/lazy/ignorant – with the internet providing no means to encourage people to be otherwise (as exists in society), selfish leeching will always exist if nothing is done to encourage otherwise. “You can’t force people to be courteous drivers. The best you can do is design lanes and roadways to encourage courteous driving.” – eclectica (from an excellent post in WinmX – leeches!!!)
#5 Forced sharing would not deter users from a program. File sharers just need a kick in the butt to start sharing. Who wouldn’t effortlessly enable sharing in order to get/download a ton of stuff that they want. It’s like trying to sell a Porsche and worrying about your customer not wanting to part with a new 20 dollar bill that you’re asking for the car! Furthermore, the resulting greater number of files available would attract the masses.
Conclusion: Forced sharing is needed, and the majority will love it!
Some possible ways to implement this:
- Everybody starts with 1.5 gig free downloads – beyond that, every kb they download has to be matched by a set amount of kb uploaded.
- Or maybe a priority system like Vladd44 and others have talked about in this forum.
- The DC system obviously doesn’t work for the small HD guys, compared to other programs, but maybe what DC does is the only way to force sharing?
- they can see how much you’re sharing at any given moment – maybe that’s more practical than tracking how much someone’s uploaded/downloaded?
Tell me your thoughts peeps! Anyone got a better idea?
