New Gnutella Client Called FreeWire

The first visible release of FreeWire is simply a copy of LimeWire without ads. It has been rumored that FreeWire has spyware, but nothing has been confirmed. If you install FreeWire, Zeropaid suggests running Ad-Aware after you install FreeWire just to make sure your system is clean. LimeWire is open-source, what FreeWire is doing is legal but damaging to the open-source community. By taking the code and contributing no actual work or information only hurts FreeWire’s chances of becoming a popular client here at ZP.

Some have stated that the developers of LimeWire have become greedy and only look to profit from gnutella and p2p, but in retrospect look at the current costs of running a software development company and your opinion might change. An alternative such as Clean LimeWire provides shelter to ads and spyware that make using LimeWire rather painful. But you can be the judge: Endure banners and spyware to help promote gnutella or use advertisement-free clients.

From the Developers “FreeWire will raise the bar for Gnutella apps significantly. It supports all the most advanced features of the network that only LimeWire and BearShare currently support (0.6 protocol, UltraPeers, swarm downloads, etc…) and a huge host of features are planned for upcoming releases.

We at FreeWire P2P believe that with our development focus we will take Gnutella to a whole new level. Check out the program– I’m sure you will be impressed- it’s best-of-breed, far more complete than MorpheusPE and many others. It has and has no integrated ads, begs, or shopping annoyances like LimeWire and BearShare.

What makes FreeWire so important to the P2P world is that it is, like LimeWire and Morpheus, completely open source under the GNU General Public License. We believe that open standards will begin to take over and push development on decentralized P2P services significantly, moving focus away from proprietary protocols like FastTrack that encounter a lot of legal roadblocks.”
