Downloading Files on the Go with uTorrent

Though personally partial to the Azureus BitTorrent client server, the small memory footprint of µTorrent makes it a a great way to download files on the go. With schools across the country back in session and students always looking for a convenient way to download files, uTorrent 1.6 can be used on any portable USB or other removable disk drives to start and stop downloads on the go.

A recent article here on Zeropaid, Back to School P2P Roundup, chronicles a number of methods of file-sharing and P2P software for those of you out there gearing up for the new school year. To expand on this article is a method whereby you can use the uTorrent BitTorrent client server on portable datasticks so that you can start and stop downloading files from any PC anywhere and at anytime. You can plug it, for instance, into your friend's laptop in a different building, download some music files over homework, and then take them back to your dorm room and transfer them to your own laptop. The same can be said for multi-tasking at your school's computer lab, where you can take your downloads with you when you're done.

To set up uTorrent on your removable disk drive simply do as follows:

1. Download and install uTorrent onto your PC or laptop.

2. Next go to: C:\Documents and Settings\(name of user account here)\Application Data\uTorrent on your computer and copy this folder onto your removable disk drive.

3. Then using Microsoft notepad, create a blank text file and save as "settings.dat" in this new uTorrent folder, thereby replacing the older version.

4. Copy the downloaded uTorrent file onto the removable disk drive and then run it from this location.

You'll obviously need to adjust the optimal settings each time the program is run from a different location, a guide to which, uTorrent - A Beginner's guide to BitTorrent downloading, can be found here at Zeropaid.

If you have any questions about where to download files from, a list of BitTorrent Tracker sites can be found here, including the new torrent search site TorrentBoss.com.
