Once again that crack team of visionaries at Google have strengthened the long arm of their vaunted search engine.
Just released today, the Google News Archive Search will allow users to explore and search through digitized newspaper articles spanning the last 200 years.
Search results include those from both free and subscription-based news outlets.
Sources and partners in the project include the New York Times, the Guardian (UK), and online news aggregators.
Anurag Acharaya, an engineer at Google and a team member of the project notes, “The goal here is to be able to explore history as it unfolded. It’s fascinating to see how people’s attitudes and emotions have changed through time.”
I took the archive for a test drive myself and it seems to be a fairly easy way to find historical articles and material on a range of topics. The only drawback was that many, if not most, were pay to view host sites making it a good deal of them inaccessible. But all in all it’s pretty darn cool.
