From the Bitzi welcome
page: “Bitzi provides an essential utility for the world of
effortless and decentralized digital distribution: a
cooperative community catalog for all kinds of
digital files – music, software, books, images, videos –
anything and everything. “
Bitzi relies on its community of users to build the catalog,
and gives back the collected information for free reuse
elsewhere. In this way, Bitzi is in the same spirit as
DMOZ/OpenDirectory,
href="http://musicbrainz.org" target=_blank>MusicBrainz,
"http://gnupedia.com" target=_blank>Nupedia, and
href="http://freedb.org" target=_blank>FreeDB/CDDB — except the
objects being described are arbitrary files, tracked
by a distinctive digital fingerprint, or “bitprint”,
that does not require files to change at all.
With the help of an active user community, Bitzi can
become a reliable source of metadata about specific files,
external to the files themselves and independent of any
particular sharing/delivery network. (Bitzi does not
store, transmit, or locate files themselves.)
