Snakebite – A BitTorrent Webserver Made Easy

Instead of having to create a torrent, run a tracker, and then run a seeder for each file you want to share over the web, now all you have to do is drag and drop them into the correct folder and then webserver does the rest.

Snakebite “…provides all the power of BitTorrent with all the ease of use of a webserver.” It also automatically generates a fully customizable user page that will list all of the links to your torrents.

An additional feature is that you can automatically create an account on the ACTLab TV redirect servers simply by entering a username and password into the Snakebite configuration file. This account then provides you with links to give give to your friends so that they may download the files irregardless of your IP address.

This cut and paste link feature bears a striking resemblance to the updated features of the new and improved Azurees 2.5.0.0, which now allows you to publish tracker links for others to connect to with a simple click, or even the new AllPeers Firefox extension that combines BitTorrent technology with the ease of drag and drop sharing.

The Snakebite setup is pretty straightforward:

Step 1 – Install
Currently, the only installer we have is for Debian. The best way to install it is to add the line “deb http://actlab.tv/debian binary/” to your /etc/apt/sources.list file and then do an “apt-get update” and an “apt-get install snakebite”. This will also install the latest version of BitTorrent (much more up-to-date than the standard one in Debian).

Step 2 – Configure
You can edit your config file manually (/etc/snakebite.ini) or you can use the web interface (http://localhost:2020/config). The only thing you really need to change out of the box is to enter in your username and password for the redirect service. This can be any username and password that you want. Your account is automatically created the first time you run snakebite.

Step 3 – Run snakebite
You can launch snakebite like any Debian service: /etc/init.d/snakebite start.
