Like any freeware you download off the net, you should beware of spyware, or even worse, scumware. [Click here for more details.] Most P2P users are already aware of spyware, which some software sites admit to installing right up front. Spyware is installed with another program, like Kazaa, and allows you to be tracked on your surf along the Internet. Scumware does that, plus, it can act like a worm and rewrite HTML on your web server or rewrite HTML that you have HTTP requested in your browser, adding porn pictures and links (better think about your kids!), etc.
Click here if you are interested in installing Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware, a freeware (ironic!) that scans and removes scumware from your PC.
I just installed and ran it on two Win98 machines (found 64 spyware files on one machine!) and on two separate Win2000 AdvServ machines (found one spyware cookie) and it worked fine, no errors.
