Declining CD, DVD sales: Maybe used market is to blame

“They could pay full price for the new book, or they could pay less for an equally shiny new volume. While it sounds like a boon for the buyer, it’s a potential disaster for authors.” Is it possible that new CD, DVD and book sales have declined because the Internet has helped fuel the used item market? Think about it. I was the only person among my group of friends to buy used CDs, movies and books several years ago.

But today, with sites like eBay‘s Half.com and the used “bins” at stores like Djangos, Tower Records, and Amazon, I have few friends that don’t shop for the used item first. And if an item is available in large quantities used, that should tell the artist and the publisher something about the product’s quality!
