In the first two quarters of the current fiscal year, sales of sound-carriers fell by 3.4 percent over the level of the first two quarters of fiscal 2005 to 63.8 million items according to the latest figures published by the German recording industry IFPI. In contrast, the download market grew by 36 percent to 10.2 million individual songs and 0.7 million “bundles.” IFPI stated that downloads to mobile end devices are helping the growth of music downloads.
“These are good signs, but the overall market is still not developing according to expectations,” explained Michael Haentjes, chairman of IFPI. He claims that the “ongoing common use of illegal sources on the Internet” such as peer-to-peer networks and “the unresolved problems due to excessive private copies” are “slowing down market growth for music downloads. The Association said it plans to redouble its efforts to combat illegal downloading.
