Music Industry Sues LimeWire

A coalition of major recording companies sued the operators of the file-sharing program LimeWire for copyright infringement Friday, claiming the firm encourages users to trade music without permission.

New York-based Lime Group LLC, its subsidiaries who designed and distribute LimeWire, and the corporation’s top executives, are named in the federal court lawsuit, which was filed in the Southern District of New York, the Recording Industry Association of America said in a statement.

Record labels owned by Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Vivendi’s Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and Britain’s EMI Music are behind the complaint, which seeks compensatory and punitive damages, including at least $150,000 for each instance in which a copyright song was distributed without permission.

The case is the first piracy lawsuit brought against a distributor of file-sharing software since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled last year that technology companies could be sued for copyright infringement on the grounds that they encouraged customers to steal music and movies over the Internet.

Better they sue some software companies than users.

The Music Gestapo would like you to think that the court ruling declared ALL P2P software to encourage copyright infringement.

BUT that is not the case. The court ruled that grokster actively encouraged copyright infringement…in other words they advertised and encouraged people to download copyrighted material.

Just the existance of P2P software DOES NOT encourage copyright infringement. THAT was NOT declared by the Supreme Court.

Intersting. Stil a fine line though.

I don’t know the reason but didn’t Limewire try to go legit with filtering? I think those companies likes to limit our choices even if they are legit price fixing???

i think the $150000 number is funny. again they demand an incalcuable number many times the country’s anual income. i can belive the “encourage” argument though. my sister started using limewire and she was convinced it was perfectly legal.

Has anyone looked at the results you get from Limewire Pro? It ENCOURAGES you to BUY MUSIC TRACKS and even give a link for a place that offers music for sale as well as having a built in filter that can be turned on. I really don’t see the RIAA winning this one easily becuse Limewire is not outright encouraging infringement! Matter of fact they are doing the opposite.

This sucks! Limewire is one of the best for music tracks :(
