Altnet Collecting ‘File Fingerprints’ In Anti-Piracy Database

Altnet, a peer-to-peer distributor of licensed content, is expected to announce on Wednesday a global database of “unique identifiers” designed to help bust piracy.

The “Global File Registry” will contain a list of unique identifiers, a sort of digital fingerprint, that the company will apparently make open to others hoping to look for an autmoated way to detect copyrighted files. The tool will even allow content owners to disconnect specific users of GFR-subscribed peer-to-peer networks without input from either the user or the network.

GFR is the “cornerstone of Altnet’s new online content protection and digital crime prevention strategy,” the company said.

“We believe GFR will usher in a new era of cooperation for online content and distribution industries, with artists and consumers standing to be the greatest beneficiaries,” said Kevin Bermeister, chief executive of Altnet, in a statement.

I love when they screw the customer then spin it in the press release to try to make it look like a benefit to them. Like when Microsoft feeds you DRM WGA or TCPA and calls them security updates.
