A Newport News man and an Isle of Wight person accused of illegally downloading and sharing music are two of 76 people sued nationwide by record companies this week.

It’s the latest wave of copyright infringement lawsuits filed by a group of record companies in an ongoing attempt to stop music piracy over the Internet.

William Curling, of Constance Drive in Newport News, was sued Tuesday for an unspecified amount of money after record companies say he posted copyrighted songs on file-sharing Web sites. Shil Upton, of Isle of Wight, was sued, too.

Two other Virginia defendants — Sonya Manuel of Fairfax and Christina Perez of Norfolk — were sued over similar accusations.
