Sony Corp chairman Howard Stringer has admitted that the electronics icon had taken a gamble with the high price of its new PlayStation 3 but predicted the console would still trump its rivals.
Stringer also expressed confidence that the next-generation Blu-ray high definition DVD technology, which Sony is pushing against a rival format, was winning over the heavyweight Hollywood movie studios.
Both the PlayStation 3 (PS3) and Blu-ray are seen as crucial to the future of Sony which has been steered back on track to recovery under Stringer, a former journalist who last year became the company’s first foreign boss.
“The price of the PS3 is high … but you’re paying for (its) potential,” Stringer told a press conference to mark his first year in office during which he unveiled a major overhaul of the group including 10,000 job cuts.
Anything over $400 is outrageous for a console system. Doesn’t leave any money leftover for games.
Actually joking aside I agree with Mels…this could possibly set a new “shiping price” for future ps3 consoles. That would be very bad because the price will only keep going higher until it gets so high you will be able to purchase a good high end computer for what you can get a new playstation for!
I really hope that future scenario does not come true but the way things are going with consoles it just might. Again I don’t agree with console makers that want to make a “do it all” box…I just want to PLAY GAMES on a console! Is that really too much to ask?
@Mels Smileys 45…..don’t worry Mels you can always go the “cheap” route and get the “econimical ” $500.00 model with the smaller hard drive….LOL!
As consumers we better hope this price tag won’t fly or we will hence forth be expected to pay 600 for a new console. I think its an outrage
i know i called the PS3 a piece of shit in the other ps3 news anoucement but realistically i KNOW its going to be a system worth having. the problem is that there isnt anything about it worth buying it over for over a year after launch. since the orginal PSX i have always gone nintendo first then sony second and i havent regretted it at all.
$500.00 to $600.00 price tags better be worth a LOT of potential! Because if they burn their customers this will come back to haunt them!
