The world-renowned scientist commented today that in order for the human race to survive it must be able to "…find new homes elsewhere in the universe" because of the high probability that Earth will be destroyed by either man-made or natural disaster.
He remarked that if we can avoid annihilating ourselves in the next 100 years that we should have self-sustaining space settlements to ensure the continued survival of our species.
He too noted our potential to have a permanent colony on mars within the next 40 years and perhaps a moon base in less than 20.
Speaking at a sold out event in Hong Kong he made plain his concern in an AP story that we must spread out into space to survive as "Life on Earth is at the ever-increasing risk of being wiped out by a disaster, such as sudden global warming, nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus or other dangers we have not yet thought of."

Not very impressive for a genius everyone with half a brain could have came up with the idea in fact ive pondered it a few times. It only makes logical sense that in order to sustain your species you need to stablise yourself over vast distances. As soon as we inhabit other planets in our galaxy we should immediately move to other galaxys since the sun will not last forever when it goes everything in its vacinity will die. I saw in the next 100 years the travel to other galaxy’s may be feasible.
God help the other places that we move to.
What if we are already from the other places…
“Not very impressive for a genius” LOL that’s what I was thinking. I don’t think we’ll have any problems in the next 100 years besides us blowing ourselves up. The earth has been supporting life for all these billions of years anyway right? The sun won’t run out of fuel for billions of years so I don’t think we need to make traveling to other galaxies our first priority. Colonies on Mars? We need to get our own act together on earth and then we can afford to do that kind of stuff. Basically as long as we live in a capitalistic economy that wont be possible. I don’t want to sound communist but until we can all just get along and cooperate instead of break eachother down it won’t be possible. I don’t know about other countries but America is decades behind where we were in th 60’s as far as space travel and personally I can think of better things we could be doing with those billions right here on earth.
“genetically engineered virus…sudden global warming…nuclear war…” you might add to his list the biggest threat of all…people like the last poster. If we followed his advice we would surely be headed for extinction. Whose act is he referring to? Perhaps himself and his ilk can retreat to a leafy place where buying and selling is banned where laziness is taught at university…(oh sorry it ilready is it is called sociology and cultural studies) and leave the rest of us to get on with pushing the human race forward (and unfortunately having to feed those that like to experiment with various degrees of mixed economies eg the Soviet Union Cuba and North Korea)
Capitalism gave you this internet and the computer you use to criticis this mode of production. I think mister Hawking is completely correct we DO need to make travelling to other galaxies our top priority. The biggest threat is from backwards ideologies and religious insanity as preached by AlQaeda and the Green Ecology movement. They seek to rubbish science and force people to stop pushing science forward. We must defeat them if we are to survie as a race. I say this from a pragmatic viewpoint. Green Ecological Religious Ethnic Fanatics do not understand anything apart from criticism complaining propaganda the dark ages. They know how to make the human race extinct. The strong must defeat them so that there is a future for humanity. Paradise is a useless concept to an extinct race. We can mostly get along we don’t break each other down most of us want freedom are colour blind care about people and have a conscience. Do not believe this nonsense.
