| A frequent problem when it comes to BitTorrent downloading is of course the “where,” the “Where do I find stuff?” question. Well, it comes down to two categories, public and private. Public sites are those that do not have a defined or limited number of memberships, whereas private sites are those that do. I’ll go over the ins and outs of each, and provide you with some direction towards what sites will best suit your needs and oftentimes patience. PUBLIC SITES PUBLIC SITES Public sites consist mainly of search engines that provide you with links to BitTorrent trackers from sites catalogued in their database. There is also the type of public site that has an open-ended membership or registration requirement, meaning that you must register, but they never limit the sum total of members. I’ll first go over a few of the public site search engines and then follow up with a few of the open-ended membership sites afterwards. The most popular public site search engine is probably Pirate Bay , but it is also, in my opinion, one of the worst. The trackers usually suffer from poor seeder to leecher download ratios, meaning long and drawn out download times for a given file you are seeking. But, to be fair, I have also found some cool stuff on Pirate Bay so it can be worth your time if you find yourself looking for rare or odd stuff. For instance, as shown in the picture below, found this random movie “Baraka.” It’s labeled as a “good pot movie.” My friend who actually downloaded it said it was definitely a good pot movie. I don’t know about the last entry, “Guitars on Mushroom,” but it does sound kinda cool. To note though, notice the number of seeders and leechers. With “Baraka,” you have 3 seeders and 3 leechers. Now for a 700MB movie be prepared for it to take a while. In this case my buddy says it’s worth it, but for say a Britney Spears video? Fugetaboutit! TorrentSpy is also another popular public site search engine. My buddy has found it useful from time to time for things like TV shows, or just random things that pop into his head. It usually has pretty decent download speeds, thanks to the way it’s database is connected externally to a number of private defined-membership sites like Demonoid . To prove that it has better download speeds I punched in the same “Baraka” flic. If you notice in the image below it has a much much better download ratio, with 32 seeders and 36 leechers. Now that’s a ratio that will add years to your life. My friend has also found it to be useful for finding everything from flics and TV shows to XBOX and PS2 games. It really runs the gamut of desired media. The last public site search engine I’ll cover is Mininova . To quickly compare and contrast it to the other two, TorrentSpy and PirateBay I’ll use the same search query “Baraka.” As shown below it has 29 seeders and 19 leechers. That’s not as good as TorrentSpy but still a heckuva lot better than PirateBay . My buddy has noticed too that it can be useful for finding random things as well, like new flics or even all things Howard Stern (Hey now). So you’ll want to bookmark this site as well. As far as public sites with open-ended registration, there really isn’t too many out there. They are typically narrow in scope, offering a single category of media for downloaded. XBOX-Sky is a perfect example, solely offering XBOX backup games for download. Another is Red Skunk Tracker which is a Howard Stern exclusive site. It offers audio and video of any imaginable thing related to his show and nothing more. These particular sites, as I said, are few in number and narrow in scope, but you will find them on occasion in the vast sea that is BitTorrent. PRIVATE SITES These are sites that have a strictly controlled or defined membership base, limiting it’s numbers to invite or infrequent registration only. The reasoning behind this is to both prevent intrusion by the powers that be, i.e. RIAA, MPAA, FBI, OPP, THC, etc., etc.. Now in covering these sites I will not include screenshots per my buddy’s pleading. He cherishes his memberships and also their very existence, and by showing what they have for download could prove detrimental to either. For music, my buddy claims OINK as his favorite. He cites it’s breathtaking trove of rare and popular music alike as well as it’s vast assortment of PC and MAC programs in making this assessment. I have seen some of the stuff he has downloaded and it does indeed run the gamut of the musical spectrum. He has obtained rare concert bootlegs seen nowhere else but in the Pink Palace that is OINK . It’s beauty is truly breathtaking when it comes to music. Demonoid is a good place to find TV shows and random PBS and BBC documentaries. It has a number of things available as well, but again, my buddy claims it’s true greatness lies in these fore mentioned items. Torrentit, TorrentLeech, and FileList are the mainstays when it comes to getting flics. My buddy won’t say or show exactly what he’s gotten from these sites, but he claims they have the “bestest of the best.” What makes these private sites so powerful is in the way their membership is strictly controlled. Ones download ratio is thereby the mark by which he is judged by the all powerful ADMINS that run them. Let your ratio get too low and you get the boot. Thus, members are very mindful about leaving items open and available for download, making for tremendous download speeds that oftentimes max out ones connection speed. For entrance to these sites, one usually must be invited by someone else. They sometimes have open registration, but it is rare and infrequent, so don’t get your hopes up. In short, there are a wide variety of BitTorrent sites out there, both public and private. It takes some time and a little legwork to find those that, like I said, best suit your needs and oftentimes patience, but it can be done. Note: If you are new to the BitTorrent "download scene," a guide on getting started can be found HERE at ZEROPAID. |

Public sites may get you in big trouble. How many cease and desist letters go out daily on all the torrents these sites offer?
Private sites may also get you in big trouble, but that remains an unknown at this time. Any closed group of pirates can get people in trouble, bad trouble, if the wrong people join.
I think when it comes right down to it, the nitty gritty, if you will, the cool thing about private sites is way all our compelled to seed their darn stuff and not just hit and run, meaning brisk downloads for all.
Perfect example is OINK, where you can easily find a popular album release with like 70 seeders and maybe 1 leecher. Talk about speed! Vroom vroom baby.
You are right but, theres always a but, people trade invites on web sites to people all the time. Slyck is really bad about this. There are people everyday swapping invites and Im sure the MPAA/RIAA has noticed this. There should be little question its only a matter of when they will take down the uploaders of copyright content as most people have signed up with an email that will lead a trail right to their front door even if the use a proxy 24/7. In my mind this type of filesharing is playing right into their hands as they will be able to identify the users who bring new content. I may be wrong and these private sites may be safe forever but how likely do you really think that is? Even groups that are well hidden get busted big time. Its only common sense to figure out that many people are being logged right now and that sooner or later, lots of info will be siezed. I will shout this at the top of my lungs till the day comes because I want people to be aware of any risk and not be fooled into thinking private = safe. Its far worse. Its organized pirating on a massive level. Massive enough to attract other government groups. Take it for what its worth.
Yeah, elite ruined it since they gave just cause for FBI to enter the site. I remember seeing it on the homepage. So any visitor could see the star wars III movie was there. It was brought up in all search engines too. I guess they were daring them to come on.
Its safe to say that either way. You find your cease and desist letter more annoying when you were told by us to stop from using public sites. I Did get a warning for sharing a movie a long time ago when i got DSL. Stupid XOLOX app.
Ill ask you again mels. Which is safer to download a full 4.5 gig movie from, TORRENTSPY or pisexy.org. One is closed and may only get 3-500 snatches and 200 seeders at a time.. to 50,000 registered users. One may be behind a proxy, slow upload speeds which keep you on the download for a long time for anyone to get your IP logged, thousands of leechers and accessible to all? If you answer honestly, your contradicting yourself. If you lie, it will be shown, and known. I would not feel right into sending any noob or person to a public torrent search arena. The reason they are there is to make examples of other people and to deter them.
Here is a movie aeon flux in the Torrentspy search.
http://ts.searching.com/search.asp?h=F8380C1F5E4747A5ABAE2CD22B7F8ED6&query=aeon+flux&submit.x=0&submit.y=0
Notice which ones may have been changed or added with craP?? you dont get that with private Bt. Notice at the end. 2005 that has a few files in it. ALl the vob files are 1gig or less.. Which is dvdshrink. .Scene groups dont do that. Its different size vob files and its been passed a few times. But on this movie, i know for fact that the video is untouched. None give any real description except the xvid on there. But wheres the real untouched movie at? Here at http://www.vcdquality.com/index.php?genre=6&searchstring=aeon+flux&x=0&y=0
Tells you which groups, quality, size, how many pieces, and disc if its xvid. 90 minute movie is 1cd.
If you posted garbage like this on private sites, they ban you, cancel your upload privilages. Here in public arena, your in for a treat of misguided files, search tactics that last forever for that movie you want, and lots of waiting. No rules, no holds barred.
By the way, I mentioned a site that has all things Howard STern for download, and now I recognize that trading invites is not allowed, but if anybody wishes more info, and trust me YOU WILL BE PROPERLY VETTED, PM me and I can give you more info about its location. For porn invites or something you know I'd make no such effort, but being a big Stern fan I'd more than love to help a "brutha" out. Plus, if all goes bad I still have my Sirius to fall back on. Anyways, let me know.
They DID go over the logs that loki gave them but they produced no lawsuits of any kind! And belive me when I tell you this, if they COULD have found information on a "gold mine" of filesharers, they would have tried to sue every one. But they didn't find squat! They just made a public case about them looking through the logs and then nothing ever came of it.
So when someone tells me that all the MPAA or RIAA or whoever is wanting to do is shut down a BT site and then they can go over their logs and sue people...GUESS WHAT..IT ALREADY HAPPENED and NOTHING came of it! Now most BT site owners are usually far more careful with "logs" than they have ever been, because they realize what happened to loki. But what others have stated is correct....loki was partially to blame because they advertised that they had star wars 3 available for download....something that the supreme court said you COULD be held accountable for if you are a BT or any p2p site owner.
The thing that they are finding works best ... is to keep a low profile! That is the best way to not have the authorities not come breaking down your door and DON'T ADVERTISE when you have a stupid illegal file! (That should be common sense, but loki apparently didn't get the picture until he got busted!)
It does make one beg the question however, is the reason there have been no lawsuits because there is a lack of evidence, or is it because there is a lack of will or want on the part of the authorities? Thats what Id like to know. Being that the RIAA has made it quite clear that they intend to sue EVERYBODY, insane as that it is, maybe they realized that it just wasn't feasible.
What I found on usenet as well as private BT sites.

I was a member of elite torrent when it went down. I had a few movies from there, but didnt get star wars III. I thought it was well worth to go see it, not to mention it had a big time code on the screen and was pixalated. People did learn from it. A few sites i was a member of posted on there that there be no star wars III posting til after theatrical release date. I wish i saved the screen shot of the homepage so you could seen what they done. You didnt have to be logged in to view it.
private bt all the way.

But if you are wanting to get as close to anonomyous as you can, aside from being able to join a topsite, newsgroups are the best option period. No stupid "upload" demands like private BT sites have and they max your download speed better than ANY private BT site. Newsgroups are definately the best option there is, but they DO require a good newsgroup provider! Which usually means that you need something better than the free newsgroup provider your ISP offers.
It turns out that, gasp, trackers can't tell when clients are sharing with each other. There are some hackneyed algorithms where your client can optionally inform the tracker about the peers who sent you stuff, but it's not authoritative to say the least, nor necessary. So my friend was in quite a laughable quandary. In "banning" my friend from using the tracker, they also prevented my friend from seeding the file. Talk about a catch-22, the nearest allegory I could find to stupid trackers that think they're helping by banning users with odd ratios, was that old concept of debtor's prison where if you fell into debt you went to prison, where you weren't given any wages to pay back your debt.
So private registration, fine. Invite only, great. Obfuscating relayed protocols, be my guest. But don't try to monitor people's upload and download ratios at the tracker level. That's a job for the clients, who actually participate in the uploading and downloading, and frankly the bittorrent protocol already chokes the bandwidth of peers who won't upload, so there's no need for the tracker to ever intervene, except perhaps to form elite cadres of foppish rich boys who have tons of bandwidth and can't fathom why other people don't just go purchase T1 lines and play fairly.

How do I find those newsgroups please?

Are u actually off ur nut mate? There are so many things wrong in ur "story" i admin on a private site and come across people like ur
"friend" constantly.... Fact is, those hackneyed algorythms are actually there for a number of reasons.... such as.... (and take note this general set of reasons is given on all private trackers...
1.members of private sites are generally the same as guys on the DHT sites ie. we dont like to pay through the nose for our downloads.
2.where two 2 parties differ is in the fact that most of us are sick of guys who dont share... They think that other users are there for thier convenience... (its easy to say ur a "filesharer" on DHT when in fact u contribute nothing to the community and we only have the word of the Hit n Runner to verify said statement....
3.Genuine filesharers like to be amongst there own kind, so they form communities of like minded individuals so they can share both files and advice and knowledge... and in return recieve the same....
4.these private sites implement the ratio rule to weed out the p**s-takers, and also becouse we all actively share the cost, workload and time it takes to ensure our communties keep going....(EG. I have a remote connection or as u say "a foppish T1 line" which I place at the disposal of the site which i fund from my own pocket... as well as my standard home connection too) I want to make sure that the people i do my filesharing with are the ones in my community...)
5.Ur getting it for free, ur part of a community who will help u a lot more than some script kiddy who is just itching to install keyloggers or rogue code that will screenshot and send back ur bank details in the time it takes u to simply untick the ENABLE DHT box in ur client.. Is that such a big deal? No! it isnt is it? Now sod off back to limewire where u belong!!! Ur "friend" can snatch the s**t out of whatever malware he wishes on there...
