RIAA Profits Nearly $100 Million by Suing P2P Users

As of today, an estimated 18,337 Internet users have had suit filed against them by the RIAA for the alleged distribution of copyrighted materials.

I get these figures from a Janurary 2006 article at Slyck.com, in which Slyck states that as of January 31st there have been 16,837. Since then, in the month of February and the month of March there has been 750 more sued for each, resulting in the number at the top.

Most RIAA lawsuits against individual file-swappers result in the defendant settling with the RIAA to avoid going to court and possibly losing against the multi-billion dollar organization.

Generally, these suits are settled at $3,000 USD to $6,000 USD. I have seen in the past few years a $2,000 or a $7,000 every now and then, but for argument’s sake, we will say the average settled lawsuit is $5,000, since this appears most frequently.

Let’s say all 18,337 USA citizens sued have settled for $5,000 USD each, to avoid going to court and possibly losing their homes. That would give the RIAA massive profits of $91,685,000! The RIAA has profited nearly $100million by suing individual who are too helpless to fight back, since their ’sue em’ all’ campaign began, years ago.

Despite Music Industry studies which indicate that P2P users are more likely to purchase music, and P2P does not damage music sales, the RIAA continues to sue the magic number of 750 people a month.

100 million thats bullshit!!!!!! most if thease casses get dismissed or riaa doesn’t pursue them by the riaa’s own press release say s only about three 3000 or so have actually been settled since it all strted in 2003. If riaa was making this kinda money why did they have to go to a new firm because of casess the getting money different matter in most cases it cast them more money try and collect than the settlement.

whatever the actual amount is no one seems to know for sure but i think the author backs up his point very well and at least seems to prove they are making money and that is the point of the lawsuits not to do anything they say it will since it’s completely inaffective and unjustified.

    sue the fans brilliant.

  6. statusquo80

i wouldnt say they are making tons of profit because after all they are still paying court costs. also keep in mind that even after a case gets settled that doesnt mean they get the money right away since most people cant just come up with 5G on the spot. At least I know i cant lol

i highly doubt they are coming remotely close to directly profiting from these lawsuits. For each person sued they need to first find that person and gather ‘evidence’ generally through a third party file a lawsuit subpoena the appropriate isp offer a settlement then go to court if necessary. Chances are this works out to several thousand dollars per lawsuit. Add to that that it is highly unlikely that more than a small fraction of those sued have actually paid out the money it seems far more likely that money has been lost on these suits.

I do wonder what their costs are per lawsuit…

  18. shawners

There not doing it to profit from it. They are doing it to scare people away from p2p and to actually buy the album in which the turn a bigger profit. If anything they settle to break even.

  19. momditty

Since they say they’re suing fans to protect the rights of their artists how much of the 100 mil went to the artists as royalties?
