Is it impossibe for us to create a non-profit group and build our own networks? It's only going to get worse if we keep reliyng on government and private corporations to provide us access. Govenment doesn't work for the people and private corporations only care about their bottom line. They can donate to the non-profit group but they will have no say in policy. We have the money. We have the resources. All that's needed is the organization. The internet should be free as in speech with the only restriction being how much upload and download speed above a set aside limit a person pays for. No government. If the government wants to spy let them create their own tools. No restriction. Except for those who choose to attack the network or use the network to attack other computers.

We can choose to keep playing these cat and mouse games but in the end we won't win. It's their network and they control it.

Actually Shawners your wrong as ultimately its a matter of "1.0" share ratio correct? Well if you abide by this maxim you could only download 1GB p/day to ensure upload not surpassing the total 1GB/day that causes flags to be raised. So if you can limit your downloading to 1GB/day than by all means do so but for those that can't well one has to do something right? It's not obviously the best thing to do in terms of maintaining a healthy BT community but sometimes a "brother's gotta do what a brother's gotta do."

IT take you 4 and HALF days to get a dvd movie. This story sounds like its told from a kid and all sneaky like. LIke the author is a spy and trying to keep it hush hush. 50kbs will almost get you 1gig a day depending on other factors. You have to limit your upload speed to ensure a healthy download speed. I can upload around 50ish. Thats maximum. My download may be 210kbs. And if you read last paragraph it says not to share to the magic of 1.0 and probably use public trackers. WHich would get you in more trouble since mpaa/riaa/bsa can log on to and get your IP give you a cease and desist letter. Stick to usenet safer. I may upload what i gain from it to private sites.
I been using sbcglobal. Never any warnings or letters about bandwidth issues. More likely its just the cable internet providers that have a problem.

The reason you have to limit your upload speed to ensure a healthy download speed is because most people are behind routers/hubs which don't do well with simultaneous uploading/downloading. The max I've ever seen any hub/router upload at without affecting downloading bandwidth is 50kbps.

So logically this guy COULD do 50kbps if he was behind a good quality router/hub a switch or nothing at all but his modem. If he queued up long lists of files and then left his computer running 24/7... well you see where this is going.

Yes it's incredibly stupid *ESPECIALLY on what sounds suspiciously like a "lite dsl" package* but realistic. I believe it's been mentioned before that lite dsl users are more likely to get hit with this kind of crap just because their plans are meant for more for light usage *browsing email etc.*.

I use a cable connection. I've never signed any contracts never gotten any "agreement" papers and their service agreement on their website says nothing about heavy bandwidth usage or fair use etc. *something I ALWAYS look for before I pay for internet service* So you better believe if they ever tried to cut my service off for heavy bandwidth usage I'd be ready to sue. I do know that they throttle heavy users but I have yet to have my connection throttled. That being said I DO show them some amount of respect in that I DON'T max out my upload bandwidth 24/7 and there isn't even enough stuff I want online to max out my download bandwidth 24/7 either.

The lesson I at least got out of this story is don't be a cheapskate - if you're going to be a heavy user don't try to cheat your ISP by getting "lite dsl" and show them some amount of courtesy by not maxing out your bandwidth 24/7.

BTW if you can't share the magic 1.0 because "the man" is after you DON'T DOWNLOAD SO MUCH. Or switch ISPs/packages and get real service. Just because you're having issues with your ISP over you abusing your $15-$20 a month service doesn't mean the rest of the community should have to pay for your habit.

Quite frankly you could tell them you are using your computer as a remote VNC server for educational applications. If they know you're using BT they really can't do anything as they'd have to prove you're illegally uploading material and I'm just gonna assume if they didn't know you're using BT but that they proably shape that traffic that you probably using encryption meaning they have nothing to go on. Not all filesharing is illegal and they can't limit you once you sign a contract stating that's what they'll give you. Leeches suck and cost all legit users more bandwidth.
