Visible Earth – NASA using BitTorrent technology

About a year back, NASA started experimenting with BitTorrent technology with the World Wind project, World Wind lets you zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth. Leveraging Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data, World Wind lets you experience Earth terrain in visually rich 3D.

NASA’s latest project Visible Earth, is a massive library of photos captured from different NASA sources. Using BitTorrent, you can download 2.9 gigs of imagery previously unavailable to the general public.

While testing Visible Earth / BitTorrent, I was downloading at about 400k.
