G2G Share bites the dust

G2G Share (originally named G2G Exchange) was one of the most innovative P2P concepts to emerge in years, harnessing the combined power of every participant’s Gmail account to perform as a dedicated 2-gigabyte file server. There are several applications available, such as Peer2Mail and Gmail Drive that will transform an ordinary email account into a file server, but G2G Share reached a new plateau by creating a searchable P2P "network" indexing the file contents of a potentially infinite number of mailboxes. G2G Share allowed users to fill up their mailboxes with files uploaded to their Gmail account by applications such as Peer2mail and Gmail Drive, as well as sending file attachments via ‘old-fashioned’ email.

In late November, Betanews published an article introducing G2G Share to the internet community. The resultant publicity’s "Slashdot effect" immediately knocked the G2G Share website offline, until it was restored after undergoing some minor upgrades. G2G Share’s developer is Robbie Groenewoudt, a 17-year-old Dutch programmer.

Unfortunately for the P2P community, Google, Inc., Gmail’s owner, also learned about G2G Share, and were apparently not pleased. Because the core component of G2G Share is a website, rather than a software application, this made the service particularly vulnerable.
