PROJECT NEON – Private P2P for free?

Project Neon is the latest and greatest concoction from that crack team of software mechanics over at DIVX, Inc..

I originally got an e-mail about this delectable (can I say that here?) piece of software about a week and a half ago from Chris of ZEROPAID fame, but took the time to get my apartment complex hooked up in tandem so as to get a feel for all the bells and whistles of the program.

The simplest way to describe it is to say that it allows you to create private “ALBUM NETWORKS” for those you want to share media files with, be it video, audio, or just plain photos. You have the option to make these albums, be it simply one, or all of them, public or private for all users who are signed on to the program. Based on each album’s setting, authorized users are allowed to stream the files from a user’s computer in the network you create and invite users to join.

But, it is much more magnificent in that it allows you to share your media files, according to the copyright trademarks of the files concerned of course, which you denote, so you can download the files onto one another’s computers. No longer do you have to set up a third party download site so that people can download a given song, or video clip you’ve created, one simply has to click and download directly onto their desktop, or even just stream at will if they so wish.

It enables users to in fact possibly pool their music and video files so that they could create a sort of “UBER-JUKEBOX,” and share remarks or comments about their latest music or video purchases.

Also, as if all this wasn’t enough, there is an instant message feature, so you can ask one another to make songs available in an album for them to listen to, or simply to talk about the weather, girls, the new Britney Spears album, whatever your heart desires.
